Some Japanese ( and Europeans ) DO have the luxury of owning some large cars. Take the Infiniti Q45, for example....clearly a big car by today's standards. This car is actually an Americanized version of the Japanese-Market Nissan Cima. Same with the VW Phaeton, another big car by today's standards, which actually sells better in Europe than it does here......one reason why VW is yanking from our shores.
However, you are correct that because of taxes, parking, fuel prices, and a number of other issues, large-car ownership is not as easy in Europe and Asia as it is here.

Phaeton does not sell almost at all in Europe (between 2x and 5x less than A8). Big cars such as A8, S class are really going down in popularity and sell in hundreds.
What I was saying is that unlike US, Europeans care about their small cars - they are not there just to be cheap transportation. Nobody in the world will brag about their Echo in US, while people will brag about their Yaris or Fiesta in the Europe. Thats why their are so many options in small cars, and on the other side, thats why US doesnt get loaded versions.
Old Yaris was ok quirky little car that people loved. And I will agree that sedan version that went by the name of Echo is/was basic transportation. But new Yaris is beyond that, way, way. It drives like an Corolla and in some ways better. Old Yaris/Echo, well, didnt really inspire too much confidence. Engineering wise, it much more advanced than Corolla, even if it is cheaper and possibly simpler car.
New Yaris is more like next level xA. And again, comparing it to Daewoo Aveo is doing it great injustice.
Hopefully we shall get real mmarshall review soon :-).

Let's let somebody else get in here and get a chance to say something....you and I have certainly made our opinions known.

i like the echo very much...i dare say it is one of the best small car in this world.
me and my wife have been driving 2000LS400 on a daily basis but we frequently go to Japan and rent cars for vacation...we usually drive the echo/yaris/vitz and corola in japan...for driving experience, yaris is even better than collora...yaris is very good!

Seen these rides in real life, and they are not bad at all!!! It is all around our roadways and dealerships....
Let's remember, Toyota thought basic model with the traditional quality and reliability, they are on the right track in getting it done. Can't really see another putting up a good competition in this category, especially when it comes to simply quality and reliability that Toyota has already own. Wait till aftermarket exterior and engine upgrades come into effect.
......And for those who still don't like the fact..........then go buy a Lexus!.....

I think Scion was able to bring in a lot of tuner culture for small cars from Japan and Europe...

That Yaris sedan even with kit, looks like an inflated blow fish.
