Default How much performance potential does a Toyota Tacoma have?

This should probably be on a Toyota board, but here goes anyway.

I used to own a previous gen Tacoma. Never even heard of the TRD supercharger until near the end of my time lease. Do they make a lot of mods for it? I know there is a supercharger but do they make a turbo for it? And is it a good project car?

The question got me thinking because getting ready to turn onto a road when I see a previous gen Tacoma racing with a Ford F150 Lightning. Now I can't tell this was SC'd or not, but the Lightning is a fast car and there is no way a regular Tacoma XCab could keep up with one, let alone be in the lead. I didn't see who ended up winning, but at about 75-80 MPH, the Tacoma had about a car length on it.

The TRD SC is pretty common on the previous generation.

Check out the customtacos board - this guy lives just a few miles from me. Here's a link to his gallery which includes dyno runs and 1/4 slips.

I'm contemplating if my taco should become my next money pit. Not too many mods for the current gen, though.

Point of reference, my friend who used to have a 2000 Tacoma Limited 4wd Manual had every TRD addition you could put (i.e. TRD headers, exhaust, S/C). With a 11 psi pulley and high octane race fuel, he was able to hit the 13's in the 1/4 mile launching in 4wd low and shifting on the fly out of 4wd to 2wd.

Here's some old video I was able to find:
11 psi EL Prototypes/ Tacoma Accellerating

Please excuse the language on this one. We were having too much fun beating people ithat night in a heavy 4WD Tacoma.
