Thinking about buying a Prius
The Prius tax credit is estimated to be $3150.
Because of the 60,000 limit, the credit for Toyota hybrids will start be reduced in October 2006, and will be entirely gone by October 2007.

The Prius is a great car! It's really roomy on the inside. Pretty good pick up as well. You can get the Smart Key and 4th generation navigation, just like on our beloved LS430. I would forgo the tax credit for a car pool lane sticker anyday. I hate sitting in bumper to bumper traffic. In fact, I'd probably PAY money to be able to drive down a carpool lane by myself.

GSXOTIC,
Great car for Cali folks if you're one of the 75,000 that gets the carpool lane benefit. If that's a priority, I'd buy one right away and apply for it immediately. In my mind, securing this benefit is a higher priority than an increased tax benefit, especially in SoCal.
I have a friend shopping for a Prius also. Of course you know that Longo, unlike a lot of other Toyota dealerships, does not charge a deaker mark up on the Prius...
How about the Civic GX, a natural gas powered vehicle? It has it's advantages too if you travel around LA County a lot - free metered parking! Perfect for those in West LA (where metered parking is $2 an hour) or downtown.
Good luck with the super slow car!

Longo had Prius in stock when we were shopping for one. Unlike some other Toyota dealerships in So Cal., that advertise "In Stock" and then only try to hustle for visitors' deposit.
So the choice is $2000 deduction + better chance at HOV sticker vs $3150 tax credit + possibility of no sticker? I think I'd prefer the first option. Yes, $1150 (in terms of dollar number and not tax ramifications) is a good chunk of $ but that HOV sticker is crucial in SoCal traffic. They say time is $ and that sticker will eventually "pay" for that dollar difference.
Maybe I should start looking at the Prius more seriously.

I'd be all over a Prius if they offered leather seats and a sunroof...
I just can't give up those comforts that I have in my ES.
And regarding the "sticker"... I've never been to CA and therefore haven't experienced its traffic, but why are you all complaining about the possibility of not being able to drive in the carpool lane(s) that are intended to be used by those that are CARPOOLING???
