For Sale: '64 Lincoln Convertible, some off-road use . . .
If you are in the market for a classic '64 Wimbledon White Lincoln convertible, you just missed your opportunity. Sold by Christie's from the stable of the late former president Lyndon Johnson, this vehicle was the terror of Highway 71 between Austin and Johnson City Texas, driven usually flat-out on "his" private 4-lane highway, built at taxpayer expense. After all, in those days, who else needed a broad expanse of asphalt running into nowhere amid the cedars-and-rocks of Central Texas but our President. Thy will be done.
The car was knocked down for the amazing price of $94K. Amazing because the car is the same one in which he used to entertain visiting dignitaries with a wild off-road romp across the expanse of his ranch - at near Baja-busting speed. I wonder if the car has been "restored" in any way . . . bent suspension pieces, etc . . . I guess it could have collectible value as a "Presidential Dune Buggy". Displayed alongside "General Lee", the two could represent the state of the art in automotive aerobatics of the late '60's.
While General Lee ran Uncle Jesse's 'shine, the presidential brush-buster hauled no small amounts of spirits in its day. No word from the auction as to whether the requisite bottle of Cutty Sark is still in the glove compartment.
