i was in traffic the other day in philly and there was this S55 Amg there and he just ripped off gettin onto the exit ramp from a stand still. The sound of the screeching tires, exhaust, and the supercharger whine was just all too much for me to handle at the moment. it was intense.

i also agree that the VQ35 sounds good at open throttle. i heard it in the FX35 this weekend just crusing by and my heart rate just got a bit faster.

Most imports sound better cuz they're not crude and truckish, they're built with tighter tolerances, many are high revvers allowing the note to be played longer. Mustangs only sound good cuz of the exhaust systems. Sit in the car and rev the motor and it'll shake and sound like a truck, only bystanders can enjoy the mustang sound.

One reason why I bought the STI was because I loved the exhaust note. It'll sound even better if I get a TBE.

I'm guessing we're referring to NEW motors?

Because the are no regular 6cyl imports that even approach the sound of the JZ-series of Toyota engines or the RB26 from Nissan...
a single turbo Supra running out 7-8k rpms with a 4" HKS Ti or Goliath exhaust sounds like pure sex

I love the sound of my SC300 with Borlas. It brings the stock exhaust note down a notch and adds a slightly deeper growl. A little closer to that of the SC400. I'm a little biased, but I also love the sound of Borlas with H-pipe on the older pushrod Mustangs. Very distinctive note. Actually, the most noteable exhaust note I've actaully heard recently has been from the FX45. Sweet sound.

Anyone actually hear the Dodge Viper? Now that car barks like a *****. Horrible engine/exhaust note. As if Dodge did nothing but pick the engine out of their truck and drop it into the car (which is basically what they did).

I think the E46 M3 is one of the worst sounding I6s I've ever heard... so raspy and nasty, they sound like a honda 4cyl with a cheap muffler but with a different firing pattern... BLECH

the V8 BMWs you see on TV are NOT the same ones that run around on the street

I agree, the Viper sounds like a tractor... horrible sound.

Another thing I have to mention... whats up with Nissan advertising the new Maxima on tv? In all their commercials it sounds like the car has a blow off valve. WTF?

I have an S, CL and SL 55. The S is "relatively" tame, The CL a little more "intense" and the SL is downright mean sounding. The exhaust sytem on the SL is much less restrictive and at full throttle it is the best sound system you will ever hear. Beats the devil out of Mark Levinson, Hardon Kardon and Bose all put together.
