Interesting......I would have expected the Prius to be on that list. Since the car is so complex and difficult to produce, perhaps Toyota simply cannot produce them in the numbers needed for this list. either way, We know that currently demand exceeds supply...top 20 or not.

I don't think they have the capacity to produce that many hybrids yet, it's still a relatively new product compared to the others, its sales already more than doubled compared to last year .

18. Ford Mustang — 81,541
19. Chrysler Town & Country — 78,350
20. Ford Econoline — 75,721
The Nissan Altima has crept up and up that list. Give a cheap car Lexus styling and good things happen.
I cannot believe Toyota might have the top 2 CARS! That is a HUGE deal, that was previously only Accord/Camry/Taurus territory. I think the new Corolla is damn ugly, but its a good size, good power, great fit and finish and people trust the name "Corolla"

Ford still has 6 on the list!!!

Its amazing how many of those products we woudn't touch are on that list.

And yearh, Sexy is right, Toyota can't build enough Prius yet to meet demand

That is because there are literally millions of Americans....heavily concentrated in the Midwest....that simply will not touch a foreign NAMEPLATE (never mind the fact that the whole industry today is global). These people are addicted to an American-nameplate even if much of its parts content is foreign-sourced. They simply DON'T take the time and effort we auto enthusiasts do to find out what they are buying....and then often don't listen to people like us who DO know. The Mercury Grand Marquis, for instance...a classic "American" senior-citizen car....is in fact more foreign than domestic when you look at parts content. Ford did this because vehicles with more than a certain percentage of outsourced parts (don't remember exactly how much) are not figured into EPA and DOT-mandated CAFE mileage averages....and the Marquis with its V8 and heavy weight generally gets poor mileage.

Now...as for the F-150 and Silverado.....barring a really extreme event in the auto and truck world, forget about seeing them bumped out of first and second-place anytime soon. They are the classic cowboy and farm vehicles, and untold millions of Americans, especially in rural areas, are addicted to them. The Tundra and Titan will make some inroads as the Dodge Ram has in the last decade.........especially if the Tundra ever finally becomes a TRUE full sizer (it STILL is a mid-sizer with a V8)........but Ford and Chevy will rule the pickup roost for some years to come.

As reported in the May 2005 issue of Automotive News, total US auto sales for the first five months of this year are as follows:

115963 LEXUS
99472 BMW
92156 CADILLAC
80392 MERCEDES-BENZ

Damn, the race is not even close anymore.

Note: Mini sales are included in BMW GROUP. Mini is a separate brand name and is not considered a luxury vehicle. Including the Mini and Rolls Royce in the BMW sales tally would be like Lexus including Toyota and Scion in their total sales.

The 99,472 BMWs sold do NOT include Mini sales. They are BMW brand vehicles only.
