Some of those guys on that board apparently don't understand some of the better radars out there. My Passport has saved me numerous times with more than enough warning before any cop can get me. The fault with most people is that they don't get used to their radar detector or they have an inferior brand.

These guys are talking about radars in general. And I know from some out here that many believe the V1 is better than the Passport, although both are excellent.

Although I agree with the Instant on Laser there is really no defense yet (unless a good jammer really works).

Plus much of it is driving technique, anyone who relys 100% on the radar detector is a fool. But someone who uses one every mile of every trip will better understand their strengths and weaknesses and be able to compensate for that while driving (speeding). Many people only use it on long trips or intermittently. You need to turn it on even if you are only going to the grocery store.

Lastly I completely disagree with these guys that talk about not being able to use it in the city since you are prone to too many false alarms. I pretty much do 80-90% of my driving in the city and there are only a few spots where they go off due to alarm systems and such, but if you use it all the time, you know where these spots are and can compensate for that.

Driving with a detector is not rocket science. They do work and if you understand their strengths and weaknesses it will be extremely difficult for them to catch you.

And YOUNG? I am probably at least twice your age. I have been driving for 37 years and have the better part of a million miles....and several hundered hours in both single and twin-engined aircraft as a licensed pilot.
I meant no disrespect, please accept my apology.

I am not familiar with laser jammers in US but in EU there are some really good ones.

I have mine installed inside of the headlight in my Audi. It works most of the time and cops can't find it. They searched me few times because they suspected I am using the jammer but found nothing.
Radar detectors are illegal in most countires and you can get into big trouble. In some countries if they find one, you are treated like they found drugs on you ... You could spend the night in jail!
Jammers are even worse so you have to be carefull!

There are few places where they can put your laser jammer inside of your car but people claim that the headlight is the best place.

Who makes laser jammers in US? Are there any brands you would recommend?

Police don't have to use either radar or laser. They can use an unmarked car ( and not always a Crown Vic that will give them away ) and simply tail you and get your speed without emitting any signals at all. Obviously this works best in uncongested areas....in traffic it is hard for them to pick one car out of the crowd.

No problem. Because I talk so much in these forums with guys in their 20's, not many know my age and experience. I don't claim to always have the answers, either, but I try to speak when experience has taught me something.

In New York, radar and laser are just used to confirm visual estimate/direct observation, nothing more. You actually have to make a visual observation first before using a device.

When you go to radar school they teach you how to visually estimate the speed of vehicles and you demonstrate the skill to pass the class. After passing, you can testify to visual estimation of speeds in a traffic court. So, you can write someone a ticket for a particular speed without even having a radar or laser. This is done in the city a lot by the Highway cops.

As for using a radar detector, some cops drive around all day with them on and obviously that will alert detectors. Other people get more creative with the "hold" switch. The newer models can be set to "fastest target" too for multiple lanes of traffic.

I like to drive pretty fast and have gotten pulled over a lot for speeding; most times I got out of the ticket but I have gotten a couple speeding tickets. I wouldn't get a radar detector at this point because I'm going to be a cop in a few months anyway...

Its really all a terrible revenue cycle. Even the new red light cameras have not shown to prevent accidents or red light running.

Radar detectors are good but also to KNOW where the cops lay waiting. That has saved my butt many times.
In GA here is a great thread where people post their cop sightings

Noice. Wasnt there a thread here about a website that had all of the speed traps in every state?? I remember reading it, and most of it was quite accurate. it was probably like Speedtraps.com or something on those means. Remember seeing that?? I gotta put that in my favorites list on my browser.

OK......I that case, you are sworn to secrecy about the laser detectors in Audi headlights. You spill the beans, we'll let all the air out of your Crown Vic's tires.

it was made pretty clear that the redlight camera is there to make money. a lot of times that's the mindset for cops or so anyway. i still remember yrs ago when the police department was short on funding or what not, cops gave up tickets like no tomorrow coz' that's their "lives" right there. a lot of respect man

If Louisville Metro cops and the local government actually cared about safety they would be nailing all the jerkoffs around here who run redlights and stop signs. I have never, ever seen that happen. It's much easier to raise revenue sitting out on the freeway.

One reason why you see so many scofflaws at red lights and stop signs is that there are simply too many of them....WAY too many of them. Their use has been abused by many local governments.......they have been erected and put up in many areas where they have have not been really needed simply for "traffic-calming" in areas that do not NEED calming. Often they are talked into this by neighborhood civic groups that lie at town meetings or exaggerate about the amount of speeding that does go on. I know that people tell falsehoods at these meetings...I have been to them a hear it for myself.....on streets that I can SEE for myself.

My laser saved me couple times too. Alotta times, the best thing is just to have common sense. 1. Always be on a visual lookout. My eyes spotted cops chillin out more times than my radar 2. Try to stick to the same routes and know where the cops usually hide 3. Try not to drive alone way in front of the pack
