Default Toyota to Begin Constructing a Marshalling Yard

04/07/2005 Torrance, CA

April 7, 2005 - Torrance, CA - Toyota Logistics Services (TLS), a wholly owned subsidiary of Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today announced plans to invest $40 million to build a 58-acre marshalling yard, vehicle processing center and a 93.5-acre rail yard to support Toyota's new truck manufacturing facility in San Antonio, Texas.

Alan DeCarr, group vice president for TLS and International Operations, said the facility will provide the services needed to transport Tundra full-size pickup trucks from the factory to the showroom floor.

Construction will begin this year on the San Antonio plant site and will be completed before the opening of the plant in the fall of 2006. The facility, which will create 75 jobs, will receive, process, accessorize and ship Tundra trucks to 1,509 Toyota dealerships within the United States, Canada and Mexico, as well as export vehicles to overseas distributors.

"We are truly excited about our investment in San Antonio," DeCarr said. "Since we launched the Tundra in 1999, there has been a growing demand for these vehicles. The marshalling yard and railway system will help meet this demand in an efficient and timely manner."

Toyota is currently finalizing the operational plans for the project. Bidding and construction are expected to begin in the near future.

San Antonio was selected in 2003 for the 2,000-acre Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas plant. The $800-million investment will be used to build 150,000 Tundra full-size trucks annually, beginning in 2006 when the larger restyled 2007 model rolls off the line. The new plant is expected to employ 2,000 team members.

Toyota Logistics Services was founded in 1976. The subsidiary is wholly owned by Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. and has facilities in Princeton, IN, Georgetown, KY, Fremont, CA, and the ports of Long Beach, CA, Portland, OR, and Newark, NJ. TLS manages all vehicle logistics operations for Toyota, Lexus and Scion.

Established in 1957, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., is the U.S. sales and marketing unit for Toyota, America’s fourth largest automotive company. TMS is headquartered in Torrance, CA, and has regional sales offices in California, Colorado, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Jersey, Ohio and Oregon. TMS has agreements with private distributors in Florida and Texas and currently employs more than 20,000 associates.

75 employees (or contractors) doesn't sound like much for this kind of responsibility.....driving perhaps up to 1000 new trucks a day off an assembly line that will probably operate around-the-clock in 8-hour shifts, processing each one, find out where each one is going, finding the right truck or train for each one, and then loading it up and securing each one properly. If so.....these men and women are going to earn their paychecks. Let's hope fatigue doesn't cause accidents and new truck losses.
