Almost got a ticket..going about 95-100 and friend got clocked at 120
okay so I'm getting on the interstate and start to accelerate and get to about 80-85 and I'm waiting for my friend to catch up in his civic and we start to accelerate a little bit and there's 4 lanes, not much traffic and we start to speed up, I'm not really sure how fast I was going at the peak but the wall was right on the edge of the lane like this
_______
Civic
My SC300
EMPTY LANE
EMPTY LANE
And it turns into this:
_______
_____EMERCENCY LANE.....COP

Hopefully you can understand my model up there.. Well I slam on my brakes and I look down and I'm still going about 80 so maybe I really was going about 100 or more but my radar goes off AFTER I pass him so he's shooting ahead, coulnd't have possibly gotten us going that fast. Anyways I see him turn on his headlights and I'm like "oh son of a *****" and I get over to the far lane and floor it off the next exit (thankfully close) and drive into city traffic and dissapear...I guess, I never saw blue lights behind me.
My friend keeps going to the next exit (the one we were planning on getting off at to get where we wanted to go and I get to where we wanted to go and wait...and wait and about 15minutes later he shows up and says he got a ticket for being clocked at 120. I didn't look at the ticket so maybe he exaggerated a bit but I know it was over 100. He told me it wasn't the Brentwood cop parked on the side but a State Trooper that pulled him over and he was going about 70-80 after the first Brentwood cop so he must have radioed ahead to the trooper waiting. I think I would have been pulled over if I hadn't gotten off the next exit.
Anywyas the cop writes him a ticket for 120 and says he could take him off to jail but doesn't and drives away, the ticket took about 5 minutes from time being pulled over to him being yelled at to the cop driving off, pretty fast.
Well lesson learned: Cops DO hide in that spot, like I alwasy thought would be a good spot for them. and only speed where you can SEE the sholders and wehre cops are. Its also probably bad to instantly drop to 3rd and get off on the next ramp after seeing a cop turn on his headlights after passing you.
What do you get for a fine/license suspension for somethign like this, my friend's 18 and has had tickets before but not for this fast, and they've all been taken off due to driving school??

In Arkansas, fwiw, speed>100mph = racing = immediate suspension (since both are worth 10 points and Ark suspends at, I believe, 6 points).
Won't be any driver's school on that one plus if your friend has any idea of going to court (even multiple times) hoping the arresting officer doesn't show, forget it! He'll show every time on a ticket that big..............

120 is rediculous... anything over 100 is what I would consider to be "too fast, and dangerous"
I unfortunately got a ticket last week... I was going 95 on a nearly empty, straight, long flat highway.... I swear lexus made these cars too fast (and me, too stupid) it just cruises at 90 without any effort....
The corporal informs me I could be arrested, my car impounded. Thankfully, he must have liked me cuz he only cited me for 85 and let me go, although he said "you need to slow way down."
Just got to be carefull and keep it at below 85 I suppose.

I honestly don't think we were going 120, but thats what the ticket was for. But I mean once I get past 90 I really can't tell teh difference between 90 and 110 and maybe 120. These cars just get up there so fast. Anyways I don't plan on speeding over 80-85 anymore and I definately won't just go and drive away anymore....kind of a spur of the moment thing and once I realized what I was doing it was too late.
Hopefully my friend was BS'ing me on how fast it was only trying to exaggerate, otherwise I'd contest it becauses there's a big differnece in what will happen between 100 and 120.

I don't know EXACTLY what Tennessee's laws are on this, but that cop probably wasn't kidding when he told your friend he could have locked him up. In my home state of Virginia anything 20 MPH or more above the posted limit OR 80 MPH and above regardless of the posted limit is SERIOUS buisness....reckless driving.
And...think the Escort or Valentine will save you? Think again. Radar/laser detectors are illegal in VA, and police and state troopers can and do confiscate them and levy an additional fine. Think you can hide them? Think again. Police cars in VA have devices that can detect when you are using one....and the power to search your car.
Of course, TN is not VA but still, you would be wise to learn from this mistake and stay reasonably close to the limit from now on. If your friend gets another chance and his license is not taken away or he is not locked up, he would be even wiser to learn it.
And...if you drive up to Bristol or Cumberland Gap and cross the border into VA, remember what I said. Unplug that squawk box and stay within 10 MPH or so of the limit....troopers rarely ticket anyone within that range.

But I'm not in VA... I know radar detectors are illegal in VA, I know they have radar detector detectors, and I know its not going to save me when I'm going that fast, but when I'm on another road and a cops coming towards me, thats when its going to save me.

Damn, this makes me think I need to start slowing down.
I drive between 110 & 150 miles every day and to be efficient with traveling time,
I usually average 85-95 mph. I get over 100mph every day. Occasionally, I look
down at the speedo and see 120+ mph. These SC's aren't even working at 120mph!
It's just to easy and really doesn't feel that fast.

What is the story on your friend? How much is the ticket going to be?...your first post didn't say.
I don't want to sound overly harsh. I believe that every young driver should get a second chance if he or she makes a dumb mistake...especially if they learn from it. I personally hope he doesn't lose his ticket. Pay the fine (and maybe some higher insurance premiums), be done with it, and get on with his life.....a little wiser.
I'm not holier-than-thou either. While I was clearly a better driver than the average teen-ager and never drove DUI or at triple-digit speeds, my record was not perfect. At age 17, I made a dumb mistake on ice that landed me into a parked car ( fortunately not at high speed, but high enough to do a fair amount of damage). I was belted and was not injured. But I learned from it and never repeated it.

What highways are you on? I know with an SC, 120 can be easily achieved, but some routes have so many cops it is way to much of a risk. I think 146, 195 are both somewhat safe, but 84 isnt.

On mine where I always get on it would be dark for about 1-2 miles (no city lights), and then the interstate would be lighted and you could see for a good mile ahead of you both shoulders. And I alwasy just risked it there was no cop there because in the last year I'd never seen anybody pulled over or a cop hiding anywhere. I guess I was wrong.
