Default the new Hybrids....

I've been wanting to get a hybrid for the gas mileage and cheap roadtrips, but i'm wondering how reliable is that hybrid system?

And how much does it cost to maintain? What the hell needs to be maintained in them?

And if it breaks...how much does it cost to fix?

I have no knowledge whatsoever in hybrids, but i was just looking at the RX400h to replace my G500 because i basically get 10-14 mpg in my SUV and that just sucks

Thumbs up

Toyota has a very good hybrid FAQ on their website, so you might want to check that out.

So far, the hybrid system seems very reliable. Nothing really extra to maintain; the concept is that they should be as close to traditional cars in terms of driving, maintainence, etc.

The only area for concern in the battery pack. It has an 8yr/100000mi warranty on it, I think, but if it goes out after that you might be looking at a $2-3K replacement cost.

I think the RX400h will be a great vehicle; it'll be the best hybrid to date.

Reading from articles, hybrids are only good in city driving. As for freeway driving or long roadtrips it's not any better???

it saves a lot more gas when going stop-n-go for 2 reasons.
1. during low-end speed only the electric motor is pulling the car
2. the mometum generated from braking is stored as the car's power.

I've also read the replacement cost might be high. But, as I understand it, Toyota tested the battery in the Prius and found it was solid to 200,000 miles. If I can find that reference, I'll post it.

Well, yes, it's true the best mileage can come from in town driving, the highway mileage still kicks my gs4's mpg. The great emissions ratings should be considered a good benefit as well.

As you can probably tell, I'm very interested in hybrids also. I'm on a waiting list at a local dealer for a loaded Prius as a daily driver. Yes, it's slow and imo, ugly. But, great mpg, nice options for price (nav, xenon, bluetooth), good on environment and current tax break all help overcome the looks and speed. Besides, I'll still have my GS4 for occassional fun.

The hybrid hilander looks pretty good too for SUV fans.
