Either he is taking pictures of the wrong cars, or the Japanese have lost their originality and started following US trends... I see mostly F&F style cars and modded european cars.
Where are the VIP cars? Where are the slammed minivans (saw one or 2, but nothing spectacular)? Where are the crazy Kei cars?
I used to dream about going there, but what i see now is very similar to Sydney Auto Salon here in Australia

Kei cars are the tiny 660cc micro machines that have a sort of cult following in Japan. It is cheaper to register them, and they are cheap to buy - but from the factory they have a 47kw (65hp?) power limit. To get the most out of the engines, they are almost all turbo.
The Japanese then mod the crap out of them with turbo upgrades and make them look real hot. With slightly over 100kw (135hp), they get them running into the 13s, which is pretty hot for a 660cc car (scares alot of bigger cars!)
