Infiniti's Q50, with help from the improved twin-turbo V-6 in the Nissan Z, will return (allegedly).
Per a report in Automotive News, the sport sedan Infiniti recently canceled, the Q50, may be making a comeback. In spite of the brand's recent push to an SUV focus, there's even a theory that the new model would offer a manual transmission with a rear-wheel drive layout. It appears nostalgia is on the menu for this new model offering, as an anonymous source cited by Automotive News states that the branding will target 50-something male buyers who remember the G35 fondly, right down to circular taillight designs that recall Skylines of old. The specific model in question is referred to as a "Q50S". Since the engine could be tuned well in excess of 400 horsepower, per the same source, a higher-performance trim is anticipated.
Supposedly, the model would be made available in the second half of 2027. I suppose we'll know more in advance of that time.
Right, and a conquest of those buyers from BMW is going to require a good bit of convincing. The performance, features, and/or value of the Infiniti will have to far eclipse the old model's. BMW is pretty much owning the mid-tier sport sedan game at the moment, which is ostensibly where the Q50 would play.
You could probably count on the fingers of the Def Leppard drummer's left hand the number of 50-something buyers for a sedan with a manual transmission... And still have room to count the number who'd buy it with an auto.
I'm 43 and if the IS 500 didn't exist I'd probably be in an M2 or M3. Infiniti is a dead brand. Will it even exist in late 2027?
I had G35 and G37 sedans and I loved both of them but it would take one hell of an effort to win me back. If they put that new 3.5L twin turbo V6 making 550hp/550tq with some nice styling and a manual for around $60k-$65k maybe I'd be interested.
As much as I love sedans, that is a very bad business decision. Looking at all of today's trends, I can't see enough new interest to support sales or profits. And making it retro instead of modern/futuristic would hurt even more.

It would have to be STUPID fast and manual to sell anything at all, then they would need to pray it becomes a cult favorite

Just dont see how it could be that price 2 years from now. They should have already had this car ready to go. Infiniti is a like a dead brand.
Don't worry, next gen BMWs will change that or maybe attract the older blind crew. I'm 51, owned plenty and outside of the G8x I see nothing I like next... and it took me a while to warm up to the G8x. The neuclasse looks like hot trash imo
A naturally aspirated V-6, rear drive sedan with a manual transmission? You have my attention Infinity.
It's using the VR30DDTT engine out of the highest power Nissan/infinity products, trucks use the VR35 and the GTR the VR38.
The earlier VR30s were known for porous block issues, and turbo failure is still common but I'm unsure of how much of that is design issue vs owner stupidity.
The DI injectors also commonly die for some reason and you will have carbon buildup eventually as all DI only engines have.
