TPMS Demistified! Pre-2016
Just wanna say thanks y'all! Just had that TMPS error finally show up on my dashboard. Signed up just to share with you guys.
This place was always a great resource, the Tacoma World is great too. Great info, but the TPMS section is bad. Hopefully, this write-up clears a lot of the confusion for people still struggling with the TPMS light.
Hopefully, this works for you.
Those cheap OEM TPMS sensors off ebay work, no need to buy aftermarket.
Just replaced all 4 today and pulled my hairout during the process. Definitely a lot of labor involved, but I did want to spend $1200. Had half-a** tools at home and did it in my garage. The originals lastest 12 years.
Post-2016 sensors you do not have to do anything with the OEM Sensors, the cars pick them up just by driving with the new sensors.
Pre-2016, OEM sensor have to be relearned. Relearning is crap for Lexus owners pre-2016. The correct terminolgy should be Inputting new IDs.
Relearning- only works for American cars and very expensive Scanners and Dealer Diagostic software (htate dealership service, they act like us enthusaists know nothing!)
Activation - Does not work for OEM sensors as they are pre-registered,
Manual - Does not work for OEM Sensors as they are pre-programmed.
Cloning - Only work with the TPMS sensor made for their own propietary Scanners
I used ThinkDiag and ThinkTPMS (I did not need this, maybe to wake up the sensors) ThinkDiag did not use these terms, which made it that more confusing.
Bottom line, I am sure these little cheapie products work, but with tons of frustration involved and no 2 scanners will work the same nor use the same language.
After, I took a photo of the OEM Sensors I bought before installing them, tried everything to get the car to pick them up, they did not after hours and hours of frustation. The ThinkTPMS was usless, but I guess it picked it up, and verifed they work.
Support is usless and the instructions are bull***t. The tons of YouTube vids are just hawkers for the many proprietary scanners and sensors.
In my case I wanted OEM, do not trick me into buying your crap. In my opinion, nothing beats OEM parts like these.
In my case, I used the ThinkDiag+ App with the ThinkDiag bluetooth scanner, there is a section called Maintenance, in there there called TPMS Reset app.
Here is the confusing part, you have to clear and reset the sensor to get to the screen where you can add the sensor IDs, one at time in a specific order.
You will be inclined to Check Signal Strength DO NOT DO THIS! This clears the sesnsors you just inputted.
Instead, exit and go to ODBCII diagnostics, you will see the new sensors buried in the section in few sub-menus.
Once you can confirm the new IDs are in there you are all set! Not sure if I had to do this, but reset the TPMS and drive for 10 minutes, the new OEM TPMS sensors from eBay started working!
I had my car ON but not in ACC mode, but I tihnk this is crap too. I remember, I was able to add the IDs with the car started, but I cleared the IDs I just put in.
Happy to answer any questions! 100% gaurantee, I almost gave up! This will work for all those who are frustrated with the TPMS scam/hustle/ruse/money grab!
Hopefully, you all get to save a boatload of money like I did!
Thanks again!

TPMS can vary from make to make, and i have my own stories to get things to work after buying sensors online. what i found the easiest w/o having to buy a scanner of my own is to go to your local america's tire and have them scan each sensor and add it to the car (assuming they are compatible in the first place).
it does vary store to store, staff, how busy they are, etc but 80% of the time they are happy to help - all for free! this is even if i did not buy the tires or sensors from them

I messed up big time and did the TPMS signal check on my car. All the sensors were working fine and no light was on. I know, first big mistake there. All of a sudden the TPMS light starts blinking very fast and doesn’t stop. Then, I do a DTC scan with my Autel mk900 and it shows 5 trouble codes. They wouldn’t clear. I followed some instructions on tech stream that said I should release air from the tires to allow it to trigger a signal to the car. That actually worked and it cleared the DTCs. Now I have the problem of that light blinking like super fast and it won’t stop. Am I missing a step here that I didn’t do? I’ve been told to use some tool called a SST on terminals 13 TC and 4 CG, then turn the ignition on and hold it like that for 30 seconds. I’m waiting on the SST part to come in from Japan. Any help is appreciated.
I had a new set of tires installed about a year ago on my ‘15 GS350 F Sport and I got about 30 miles away when the light came on. Went back to the shop, they removed the tire and sensor, reinstalled same and it’s worked ever since. Ten years old but has less than 53,000 miles.
