Ford pretty much invented this segment and this is trash from a design POV
So? First, Hyundai and Kia are probably losing more than that from all their recalls.....and they aren't going anywhere. Second, the F-series, Bronco/Bronco Sport, Maverick, and Mustang all sell very strongly....the public cannot get enough of them.
For forty years, everyone complained a fold-down tailgate got in the way of reaching in for loading. Now all of a sudden it's brilliant? Lincoln assume's the public's memory is brittle. I bet they are right. Not one reviewer has mentioned this.
Either not in the in the same segment as full-sized domestic truck-based SUV's (X7, RR, GLS), or a non-turbo V8 (Escalade).
Again, no actual competitor has a turbo V8.
Exactly. This doesn't compete with the Euros. It competes with the Escalade and Grand Wagoneer. I won't include the LX in this because they would have to sell some.

On the split tailgate on the X5 and X7 the top opens separately so you can reach further in and the lower section also opens separately if you want. It also serves as a seat. The Navigator could very well be the same.

One related thing I'll mention....I'm surprised we don't see more side-opening rear doors on larger crossovers and SUVS, like on the Mini Clubman. That compromises the trade-offs between lift-up and flip-down rear hatches.
Overall it seems like a nice update. They mentioned improved materials which is always good. I do like the split gate addition.

Correct, from the article:
One particularly new big-deal feature you’ll notice on the exterior is the “Lincoln Split Gate” that is essentially a split tailgate the likes of which you find on BMWs and Range Rovers. Similar to others, the tailgate is split so three-quarters of the gate opens up, while the remainder folds down. It allows for easier loading and unloading, but can also be used as a seat (600-pound capacity) when parked. Lincoln even offers a “Cargo Tailgate Manager” option that can function as a seatback for the tailgate, a table for tailgating events or to split the cargo area into a multi-level storage
Love the split gate! Always saves things from rolling out when parked on an incline. Can still reach in with the bottom portion closed. or when the bottom portion is down, it keeps your pants from brushing against the dirty rear bumper. More disappoint that Lincoln can justify adding it here mid cycle and the LX600 and the U.S. Land Cruiser went away from it when it was such a distinct feature for so many Land Cruiser years.
