car wouldn’t go anywhere. first rule, don’t panic. having been through something similar with the GV60 (and dealer replaced the battery), i knew i had my portable lithium GB40 noco booster in the car. opened hood, attached to 12v battery, waited a few, and car ‘started’ right up and i drove over to my office where i had to drop some stuff off but knew i had to go to the dealer after that.

i didn’t get to the car at my office for a couple of hours with stuff to do, and went out to go to the dealer with it. nothing. couldn’t even unlock the doors. knowing the portable charger was in the car, i used the manual physical key to open the driver’s door, tried the noco again but noco was nogo. the noco was barely recharged so i charged it for a while but no go still, and then thought maybe i could have the noco plugged into usb charger to charge it while having it connected to the battery for a boost. well that didn’t work, i guess the car 12v battery was draining the noco faster than the 100w usb charger was charging it. so i called the dealer, they said use the hyundai app to request a jump/tow to get it to the dealer. while waiting the hour for the tow i charged the noco (not connected to the car). got 2 bars of juice in it and decided to try one more time. success! so i drove to the dealer, canceled the tow, dealer took car to fix and gave me a loaner (lovely new elantra hybrid lol - it’s actually way nicer than i would have imagined).

dealer was great… very pleased with hyundai dealer’s professionalism, facility, courtesy, etc.

hopefully dealer has an actual fix and the car will be back on the road in fairly short order.
I have several friends who have Ioniq 5's who had the exact same issue. I can probably safely say your Model Y will never leave you stranded, short a flat tire or accident that leaves the car totaled.

Not trying to rag on Hyundai

All EVs need to go with this style low voltage battery.

Is it safe to assume you’ve been driving the Ioniq five a little less lately because you’re enjoying the new Tesla? Ask the question because EV low-voltage batteries seem to mostly work on the assumption you’re going to be driving the car frequently enough for the battery management system to top up the charge while driving. My lightning for example, will let the low voltage battery drop to maybe 50 or 60% from time to time because it knows it can recharge it very quickly. I believe mine will also charge itself if it is expecting a software update to install. As an aside, low voltage battery charge is one of the main reasons software updates either fail or don’t install on OTA–capable cars in general. Odd in the case of EV, as you’d assume this would be about the easiest of problems to solve, but even the most cursory scroll through almost any car forum will show you that low 12 V battery charge is a prevalent issue across many brands.

no. the ioniq is my work vehicle, driven most week days unless i work from home and don’t go out.
i drove the tesla home from delivery, and again this past weekend.

the ioniq definitely charges the 12v battery (from the big battery) when parked. there’s an orange indicator light on the dash which shows this.

indeed… it’s an issue. i’ve not read about the issue in teslas though… i think lex2k’s post indicates they don’t use a regular 12v battery.

Tesla is now using a 16 volt Li-Ion battery it uses the same cells as the HV pack so it should last the life of the car.

that's great. hard to believe other makers use the giant heavy and ancient ones.

New 12v being installed for free under warranty. Dealer sent me a note asking if I want a new cabin air filter for 89.95 and I declined 😂 ordered one on Amazon for $13.

that's at the heart of the issue - they are often not the ancient and heavy ones, they are often much smaller and don't hold nearly as much charge as they don't need to do the heavy lifting of starting the engine. So less room for maneuver.

in 2 i’ve seen it sure looks like a regular car 12v battery, but are you saying it’s a less capable, (charge, amps, etc.) cheaper one?

Yep, sometimes they are a little smaller. You don't need all those big cold cranking amps numbers when you have nothing that needs cold cranking.

It looks like the same battery they put in some of their smaller cars like the Elantra. It does show it being discontinued, though.

Let us know what they replace it with.

apparently that was used in the original ioniq (not ioniq 5 or 6) and was phased out.

this is what i found (google AI) on what i suspect my original was and is the new one:

What 12V battery does IONIQ 5 use:

The 2023-2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5's 12V battery is a BCI Group Size 47 (also known as H5 or LN2), which is typically an Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) battery or a flooded lead-acid battery.
i didn’t get a pic or specs of one that failed, but here’s pic of new one which is indeed, the H5 mentioned.
