I think I ruined my crearcoat!!!
So today, I decided to hand wash two of my cars, the 01 gs430 and 2010 335. Believe or not, this was pretty much the first time I hand washed a car, usually I just go through a car wash. I went to autozone, bought a bottle of Meguars soap, and a soft sponge (it feels like artificial sheepskin). I sprayed the cars with a hose, wet the sponge, but some soap on it, and went to work. There were two stubborn bird dropping spots on the GS, so I rubbed these areas pretty hard to get them out.
So then I rinsed the cars off, and took them for a fast drive to dry them. When I came back, I noticed two scratched up areas on the hood of the GS (where I rubbed to get the bird droppings). They are scratched up pretty bad, I was able to see them in the dark. I can't really see if I've done anymore damage because it is dark now, but in the morning I'll go and inspect the cars and see if theres anymore damage.
What are my options meanwhile? Get a buffer?

Washing a Car:
1. Clean wheels with wheel cleaner
2. Rinse entire car to get as much dirt off as possible
3. Put soap in bucket and fill to get foam. You want more foam than water. Most higher quality soaps require 1-2 oz...the lesser products from the auto parts store, 3-6 oz
4. Use natural sheepskin wash mitt and dunk in soap bucket
5. Take mitt and begin washing car. Top to bottom. Side to side...no circular motion
6. Rinse area washed...work in small sections.
7. Rinse wash mitt
8. Repeat until entire car is washed and rinsed
9. Dry using soft microfiber drying cloths
10. Stand back and pat yourself on the back

Well, luckily besides these two ares that I rubbed on the GS, the rest of the car, and the BMW got spared.
I am certainly not washing cars myself anymore, I'll just keep using the automatic car wash to take care of business.
I'll probably just repaint the hood on the GS. It has a bunch of little rock chips, and I need to get the read bumper sprayed as well.

One thing to remember is that bird droppings often have sand or grit in them -- likely you rubbed with the grit from the dropping.
I generally will apply a little car wash concentrate to pre-spot the dropping and let it dissolve for a few minutes, then rinse off with a strong spray of the hose to get rid of the problem.
As mentioned elsewhere, a thick sheepskin (lambswool) wash mitt is the most delicate on your paint. I use a different mitt for wheels and lower panels.
There are some nice tips on a Two Bucket Wash if you should try it at home again.
