Gazoo Preparing Unique Looking Toyota 86 – Scion FR-S Concept with 325HP Twin-Charged Engine

The 2013 edition of the Tokyo Auto Salon is turning out to be quite the event with many surprise debuts being announced as we approach closer to the grand opening that takes place on the weekend before the Detroit motor show in mid-January.

Today we learn that Toyota's motorsports and tuning partner Gazoo Racing will host the world premiere of a unique looking Toyota 86 coupe (Japan's version of the North American Scion FR-S) named the GRMN Sports FR Concept Platinum.

From the few cropped pictures we were able to get our hands on, we can see that the study will feature a unique body with different front and rear ends over the stock 86/FR-S along with some interior upgrades including bucket seats.

If the concept's name rings a bell, that's because under the sheetmetal, it shares its performance upgrades with the GRMN Sports FR Concept revealed at the Goodwood Festival in the UK this summer.

As such, it wears a twin-charged (super- and turbo-charged) 2.0-liter boxer engine, which has been further improved to deliver an output of 325hp (330PS) and 431Nm (318 lb-ft) of peak torque.

A 6-speed manual transmission feeds the rear wheels through a new limited slip differential, while other performance upgrades include a new suspension setup, more potent brakes and new 18-inch wheels wrapped in tires size 245/40R18 at the front and 265/35R18 at the rear. According to Gazoo, the concept tips the scales at 1,248kg or 2,751 pounds.

Full details and images are to be released within the next couple of weeks.

Good numbers, but the fit and finish on the outside kit is really bad.

Really? It may be overdone and showy, but the fit and finish is great.

Why the complains about the wing? It's done by a motorsports company, hence it might be there for function and not form?

Wings don't look on every car, but when done right can look great. (like the EVO or supra)

TRD is going to show off a model of the GT-86 at the TAS- called the Griffon. It lapped Tsukuba 0.4 second faster than a Ferrari 458! http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1...cept-for-tokyo

It's not a Lexus.

But it looks like it could be fun.

I'm actually pretty happy Toyota didn't cripple the car with one of their uncrackable ECMs!

Not sure if you've taken it for a spin yet but the frs is an amazing handling car. More power would make it truly out of this world.

Apparently TRD has proven the kind of "out of this world" potential the 86 has with some tuning. Can't wait to learn more details about what tuning they've done.

Toyota 86 TRD Griffon concept teased for the Tokyo Auto Salon
Laps the Tsukuba Circuit faster than a Ferrari 458 Italia

Toyota Racing Development has released the first details about their 86 TRD Griffon concept.

Set to debut at the 2013 Tokyo Auto Salon, the Griffon was recently tested at the Tsukuba Circuit where it posted an astonishing lap time of 1:01:872. For comparison, Fastestlaps.com says the Ferrari 458 Italia takes 1:02.24 to complete the same task.

Official specifications won't be announced until the show kicks off on January 11th, but Toyota says the car has been equipped with a stiffer and lighter body as well as a track-oriented suspension and exhaust system.

Im liking the subtle upgrades I can see besides that wing. The lights look more European-like.

I know the wing is for function, but couldn't they make it nicer/sportier looking.
