I am about to get an IS350 and have been doing some research on the Nav hack. I came across this on Tom's website.

It looks like a way of doing the same thing without having to cut any wires?

Anyone out there know more or have any experience with this item?

 

that will never work on our cars. do the regular hack, much easier, much cheaper, more support.

 

god i want to do it but im scared to cut wires. . . jees i just need to man up!

if i take the DIY thread that is around here to a reputable stereo shop. . . that should work out right? There isnt much they can screw up?

Remember this......"If you want something done right, do it yourself". Unless I really knew this stereo shop and their track record I wouln't let them touch it.

 

Would you feel better if someone sold you a plug n' play harness extension that did this for you?

FWIW, I wouldn't cut wires either. I'd remove them from the connector without cutting them. It's not that hard to do. But I really don't care about playing video while in motion. It would only annoy me.

 

Ok, so the bit (broken english) about letting passengers view movies made me think it might do the trick. There there seemed be more parts than I would think are required.

It does make me wonder though, if you could get male/female matching plugs for the J50, etc, and just loop over somehow from pink to white? I am just brain storming here...

My only reservation about the hack is cutting the wires, I would much rather pin/unpin them somehow.

Still have not read how people are grounding the red for ML. Attatch it to the steel frame of the nav somewhere. I have not seen any pics on the DIY thread.

Oh well, once I get my car ( couple of weeks ), I guess ill decide then.

It's really easy to remove the pins from the connectors and do what you need to do without any cutting at all. I only resort to cutting when there is no other choice. You can also buy repair wires with pins already attached from Lexus/Toyota. There's a whole wire repair manual describing how to do this if you subscribe to TIS.

 

It's really not that easy to remove the wire from the hardness. Using a safety pin, I must have enlarge the opening 3 times its orginal size just to get one wire out. I know because I've tried. I thought it would be as simple as removing molex connectors for computer sleeving. After 45 minutes, I ended up just cutting the wire. Took me less than 3 minutes to do.

 

Sorry it didn't work for you. I've never had any problems with it. These connectors are far more high tech than the four pin Molex in a PC. Here's the tool they recommend:

Much easier to just cut the wires. I did mine 2 weeks ago. Getting the vents out is the trickiest part. I used crimp connectors to splice the wires, wire nuts don't hold well on such small gauge wire.

 

^^ This is why I never buy used cars. Toyota spends a ridiculous amount of money building an extremely reliable wiring harness, and someone slices into it and ruins the long term reliability because it's easier. I've had mystery electrical problems before, and never want them again. They take far too long to troubleshoot.

 

So back to the OP... will this kit work and has anyone tried it or anything like it?

 

I just got my 07 IS350 last week .
One of my friend is going to Japan this Sunday, so I am thinking to ask her to buy the TOMS TV&NAVI Jumper for me.
