Will Lexus Answer Dealer’s Call for an LC?
Nothing’s Official, so We Have Our Doubts About the Potential for an LC Cabriolet
Honestly, why wouldn’t Lexus come up with a drop-top version of the hotly-anticipated LC 500?
Dealers have been clamoring for a high-end convertible for a while now in hopes of going toe-to-toe with the competition. And it’s not like the LC’s GA-L platform couldn’t structurally handle a drop top, as chief engineer Koji Sato told Automotive News.
Perhaps for those reasons AutoEvolution is telling us that a Lexus LC Cabriolet is being considered for production. But bear in mind, they’re not citing any sources or quoting any representatives with knowledge of such plans. But hey, dare to dream, right?
AE points to the fact that by adding a drop top to the LC lineup (which, come spring, will include the LC 500 and the hybrid version LC 500H), Lexus could compete directly with all the Mercedes S-Class offerings. They also mention that the last convertible concept we saw, the LF-C2 pictured above, may be sized differently, but such technology could be representative of an LC Cabriolet — which “could launch” as early as mid-2018.
But we’re not convinced an LC Cabriolet will ever reach production. Not when we have the ill-fated RC convertible to look back at. After all, Lexus developed the RC to be a convertible, too, and then canceled it at the last minute.
What do you all think? Should Lexus pull the trigger on an LC convertible? Will they?
