Lexus vs. Toyota: Not Your Typical Comparison Test
Thinking of upgrading your non-luxury ride? Here are some important things you should consider.
Here at Club Lexus, we watch and read a whole lot of comparison tests. And we’re pretty sure you do, too. Typically, such tests pit rival manufacturers against each other, battling on tracks and back roads across the world. Fighting to see whose car is the fastest or has the most rear seat leg room. And no matter who comes out on top, the consumer is the ultimate winner.
One thing we rarely think about (or see) are comparison tests between a major automotive manufacturer and its own premium brand. But in reality, we suppose that some people are brand loyal enough to consider the leap from Toyota to Lexus. And that’s exactly why U.S. News & World Report decided to pit one against another in a cannibalistic bout. The goal? To determine whether or not upgrading to a Lexus from a Toyota is worth the extra coin.
And it’s clear that quite a bit of thinking actually went into the test. U.S. News used their own reviews and real world data to break things down across multiple categories. For devout followers of this page, many of the results won’t be a shock. Lexus unsurprisingly came out on top in regards to dealership experience, reliability, safety, performance, and interior design.
Also quite obvious is the fact that Toyota notched wins in pricing and fuel efficiency. Lexus’ pops also took home the gold in overall U.S. News rankings for both cars and SUVs. Individually, the rag ranked the Camry above the ES, the RX above the Highlander, and the 86 above the RC.
So who ultimately comes out on top? Well, neither. U.S. News called this one a tie, noting that both brands make fantastic cars. Basically, the decision to go with a Lexus or a Toyota boils down to what you’re looking for. Do you prefer great value or need a minivan or pickup? Go with a Toyota. Want luxury and unrivaled dealer service? Get a Lexus. Either way, you win. But we know which one we’ll stick with.
