Lexus Reveals 2018 LS 500h Powertrain Specs
LS 500h Uses Same Innovative Multi-Stage Hybrid System as the LC 500h
Lexus isn’t officially revealing the all-new 2018 LS 500h until the Geneva Auto Show in March. But we’re learning more and more about the flagship hybrid sedan ahead of that appearance. Lexus has confirmed that the LS 500h will use the same innovative multi-stage hybrid system as the LC 500h, a clever and unique setup already drawing rave reviews.
The multi stage system mates the traditional gasoline engine to two electric motors that drive a CVT transmission which is built to simulate a 6-speed, making the car drive like it actually has a 10-speed transmission. Both the LS and LC pair a 3.5 liter V6 with the electric motors to produce a combined 354 horsepower.
Lexus claims that the speed of gear changes with the system are comparable to a dual clutch transmission. The new system, however, is lighter and more compact. The first electric motor acts like a generator and produces low speed propulsion, while the other motor delivers power at higher speed. The result is a smooth driving experience with prodigious torque throughout the power band.
Each electric motor powers one front wheel each, while the V6 sends power to the rear wheels. All three power sources are mounted up front, with the battery pack residing in the rear of the car. Externally, the images Lexus has thus far released show no styling changes from the non-hybrid LS.
Lexus claims improved throttle response and low rev high speed cruising as additional benefits. The system also allows the gas engine to shut off completely at speeds up to 87 mph, though electric only range is pretty short. Regardless, the innovative system promises a great driving experience with improved efficiency, which is a win-win in anybody’s book. The LS 500h is slated to hit dealerships near the end of this year.
