2024 Lexus TX Has All the Cargo Space & 2 Hybrid Powertrains!
Lexus plans to offer the three-row TX as a TX 350, TX 500h F Sport Performance, and TX 550h+ plug-in hybrid.
When the 2023 Lexus RX debuted last year, some customers were surprised at the lack of an extended wheelbase, three-row L model. As it turns out, instead of two RX variants, Lexus planned to offer an all-new, three-row crossover model. Based on Toyota’s GA-K platform shared by the NX and RX, the first-ever Lexus TX is 10 inches longer than the RX, with a four-inch longer wheelbase. In short, it’s the one to get if you need seating for up to seven people and ample cargo space in a luxury vehicle that’s also fuel efficient.
In other words, not everyone needs a full-sized body-on-frame SUV like the Lexus LX or new GX.
TX 500h F Sport Performance
Visually, Lexus designers focused on aerodynamics while evolving and reinventing classic Lexus design cues. The floating rear pillar and wrap-around LED taillights are here, of course. As are new versions of the spindle grille and Lexus-L daytime running lights. Lexus calls this version of its grille the “unified spindle,” with more horizontal elements breaking up the front ends. The Lexus L-lights are also flipped compared to most Lexus models, giving them the look almost like eyebrows that connect both sides of the hood line. Overall, after the mixed reaction to the ‘dolphin nose’ RX, it’s a nice evolution.
Lexus plans to offer seven exterior color options for the TX: Cloudburst Gray, Wind Chill Pearl, Caviar, Matador Red Mica, Nightfall Mica, Incognito, and Celestial Silver Metallic.
4 Grades, 3 Powertrains
TX 350 Premium
For those familiar with the current RX lineup, the TX will be available in the same four grades — Standard, Premium, Luxury, and F SPORT Performance. Two of the RX’s powertrains also carry over, but there are a few key differences. Let’s break these down —
TX 350
TX 350 Luxury
- Engine: 2.4L Turbo 4-cylinder (275 horsepower, 317 lb.-ft. of torque)
- Transmission: 8-Speed Auto
- Drivetrain: FWD/AWD
- Estimated Combined Economy: 21 mpg
- Wheels & Tires: 255/55R20 (standard), 255/45/R22 (optional)
The 2024 Lexus TX 350 will be offered in Standard, Premium, and Luxury grades. 20-inch wheels are standard on Standard and Premium Grades with the optional 22-inch wheels available. On Luxury, 22-inch wheels are standard.
Unlike the RX, however, there is no mention of a TX 350 F Sport model. Nor will there be a ‘TX 350h’ hybrid variant. Instead, the two hybrids are as follows, one sporty, one for economy.
TX 500h F Sport Performance
- Engine: 2.4L Turbo 4-cylinder + DIRECT 4 e-Axle (366 horsepower, 409 lb.-ft. of torque)
- Transmission: 6-Speed Auto
- Drivetrain: DIRECT 4 AWD only
- Estimated Combined Economy: 24 mpg
- Wheels & Tires: 255/45/R22
Much like the RX 500h, the TX 500h is only available under the F Sport Performance banner. This system combines the turbo 4-cylinder engine from the 350 with a DIRECT4 rear e-axle, which boosts total system power output to 366 horsepower and gives the vehicle all-wheel-drive. This model also includes Dynamic Rear Steering, which improves the TX’s turning radius at lower speeds, and stabilizes movements like highway lane-passing at higher speeds.
As with most Lexus F Sport models, the 500h includes heated and ventilated front seats with added bolstering as well as unique badging, steering wheel, and dark 22-inch wheels. From the supplied press photos, it also appears as though the 500h will be a six-seater with second-row captain’s chairs.
TX 550h+ Plug-in Hybrid
TX 350 Premium pictured
- Engine: 3.5L V6 + DIRECT 4 e-Axle (406 horsepower)
- Transmission: CVT
- Drivetrain: DIRECT 4 AWD only
- Estimated Combined Economy: 30 mpg
- Estimated battery-only range: 33 miles
- Wheels & Tires: 255/45/R22
The TX 550h+ represents several Lexus firsts. It’s the first time the company will be manufacturing a plug-in hybrid in North America. It’s the first plug-in hybrid with a DIRECT4 e-axle. And it’s the first time they’ve paired a naturally aspirated V6 motor with the new DIRECT4 e-axle.
Given the added weight that comes with a larger battery, it may ultimately not be as quick and nimble as the 500h. But the 550h+ total system output makes it the most powerful TX at 406 horsepower, the most economical with up to 30 mpg combined, and gives it up to 33 miles of battery-only range. For reference, Lexus and Toyota don’t typically estimate torque with their CVT-equipped hybrids. However, third-party estimates have placed this drivetrain’s total torque output at around 465 lb.-ft.
Lastly, it’s not mentioned in the press materials, but we expect the TX 550h+ to only be offered as a Premium or Luxury grade. 22-inch wheels are also standard.
Luxury Seating, Saftey, and Cargo Space
Inside the TX, drivers will find a 12.3-inch multi-information display, a 14-inch Lexus Interface touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and an available 21-speaker Mark Levinson Premium Surround Sound System. The vehicle also offers convenient storage and charging points, with seven charging/communication ports and three power outlets.
“Lexus is reshaping luxury by making every seat the best seat,” remarked Dejuan Ross, Group Vice President and General Manager at the Lexus Division. “With the TX, we are providing an indulgent and elegant vehicle experience that prioritizes comfort in every row.” Along those lines, a second-row bench with a 60/40 split is standard, offering seating for seven passengers. Second-row captain’s chairs will be available on certain grades, as are heating and ventilation.
In terms of cargo space, with passengers in all three rows, the TX offers 20.1 cubic feet of storage. Drop the third row and cargo volume increases to 57.4 cubic feet. And with both the second and third rows lying flat, TX owners have a whopping 97 cubic feet. That’s not quite minivan good, mind you, but that’s almost double the amount of available cargo space as the 2023 RX.
All 2024 TX models come standard with Lexus Safety System+ 3.0. This suite of active safety equipment offers Pre-Collision System (PCS) with Pedestrian Detection, All-speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), Lane Tracing Assist (LTA), Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/SA), Road Sign Assist (RSA), and Proactive Driving Assist (PDA).
The 2024 TX also includes Advanced Park for safe and secure parking, with Traffic Jam Assist available with an active Drive Connect trial or subscription.
Pricing & Availability
While pricing has yet to be announced, expect the TX 350 and 500h to go on sale this year (fall 2023). The TX 550h+, much like the US-spec RX 450h+, will be available “at a later date.” The TX will be assembled exclusively at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana (TMMI).
