I asked this same question a while back also.
There was no definitive answer (maybe 215s?). Your best bet is probably to upgrade to the 16" 1993-2000 LS wheels which are 225/60/R16. You can check my 16" upgrade here.

The newest LS430 have optional 17" 225/55/R17 wheels.
Here are a couple pics of a 1990-1994 LS wit hthe 17" wheels.

Yes. I forgot to mention the difference between 15" and 16"
Lexus went with the 16"s because of the improved handling safety factor. The 15"s are pretty bad on such a big car such as the LS. Tthere is too much sidewall area on the tire.
The 16"s improved the handling/corning (giving you a number) at about 25% 'better.' Changing lanes on the freeway is alot easier, alot less body roll. I'm almost regretting not getting the 17's. If anyone has a pair of 17"s I'd think about it pretty hard.

While I'm Spending Money I don't Have...
Thanks for the info..BTW what would a set of OEM 16" rims cost? Not factory new as i can only imagine the gross-national-product-of-a small-country price Lexus would charge
