I have Potenza re730's on GS400. I actually had to drive on them while it was snowing lightly two Sundays ago, and it wasn't pretty at all. Because these are the summer tires, I new that it will be ugly driving on them in snow, but what happened scared me big time. Same evening I put Dunlop WinterSports on my GS400. With SC400 I'm using Dunlop SP5000s that are half worn, and I'm hoping that I can survive the light snow.

I tried the Blizzaks but didn't like them at all. I'm using the Dunlop M2 WinterSPorts and like them a lot.

I just wasn't impressed by their "grip". They didn't feel any better than the Michelin Pilot "all weather" tires. For a dedicated snow tire, I expected more.

I have a '96 SC3, no LSD (yet).

THE_CEO,

You have to ask yourself a question about how bad the roads get in Michigan. In Chicago, the IDOT is doing pretty good job when it snows, and mostly the roads are clean.

If you get a lot of snow and the roads are not plowed quickly, I would use the Blizzak WS-50 tires. They should be the best in Snow/Icy conditions. On the other hand they are not as good in on dry roads (Q rated).

If the roads are plowed quickly and mostly are dry, I would use the Blizzak LM-22 or the Dunlop Winter Sport M2 tires (also you should look at Michelin Pilot Alpin and Pirelli Winter 210 SnowSport). They handle the snow and also behave better on the dry roads (H rated).

Of course there is nothing wrong with all-season tires as well, if they have a decent amount of the tread left on them. But if you need more snow drivability I would stick with the winter tires in the winter months, and the summer tires for the rest of the year.

I'm not trying to be negative about them, I just preferred the Dunlop WinterSports.. But then again, I'm in NJ. Probably entirely different up there in the Tundra ;-)

Agreed with ChrisK.
If conditions are especially severe and you spend more time on snowy/icy roads than salted/dry ones, go with Blizzak. They're soft and have a very chunky tread.

If you live in a surburban/urban area where the roads are cleared in a reasonably prompt manner, you're better off with the Pilot Alpin. They handle quite well on dry pavement, it doesn't feel like you're riding on eraser-soft snow tires (and they won't wear excessively on dry pavement, either). I had them on my 3-series and loved them, and I have relatives using them on an M3 and IS300 and they seem to agree.

I'm going with ChrisK on this one, depending on your location Blizzak is were it’s at. I have 8 year old Blizzaks on my SC and after the 3" we had here in Lansing, I got to work in the morning and more importantly I got out of the lot and home while others had trouble.

I'm literally skiing across this damn city these days.
I'm actually starting to enjoy skidding across the roads...
I hate the weather here.

Central NJ here too and My Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires seemed to do well today in combination with the ECT Snow on and cautious driving. Still not as good as a true snow tire, but I felt stable and could get up hills in today's weather where I know I would have more trouble if I still has my summer tires on.

MPS A/S are also very good in dry and wet conditions, it's an All Season tires, so it must be tested for All Seasons? Either way these tires are so much better than the OEM Bridgestone RE030s that came with my GS.
