Install snow tires before a long Christmas drive?
I'm going it be driving back to Atlanta for Christmas and I am pondering if I should put on the snow tires before the trip. It's a about a 14 hour drive each way. I guess it really depends if there will be any snow on the ground but any other negatives to driving such a long way on snow tires if it did not snow? Maybe reduced mileage due to rolling resistance?
What is also interesting is looking at the extended forecast. I don't know accurate these are but very little snow is perdicted through the end of December. Here in NJ it has been the warmest November since the 1940's I believe. Just seems pointless to put on snow tires without any real snow being perdicted through December.

Here's an article if you are interested:

One year we got lazy and drove through a decent part of the summer with winter tires. There were no adverse effects other than them wearing quickly.

Your entire route is practically interstate highways. They're always the 1st to be cleaned and plowed (and brined) on the prediction of snow.
I've drive usually 4x a year from Delaware to Syracuse, in the fall and winter. We even departed Wilmington during blizzard conditions in central PA and NY (because my best friend was pleading we continue our trip, lol). While it was slow going, I never got stuck nor had any issues. Actually, I'm lying. I did a 360 after going through a toll booth in PA. The snow was so high and my tires wandered outside the cleaned areas, when I hit the tall piles of accumulated snow, the LS did a 360! We were going about 20mph departing the toll booth area though, so nobody was around and it was wide open space.
I honestly don't think there's going to be snowfall in excess of 8" south of Maryland anytime soon.
You're totally overthinking your trip to the state next to Florida.
We didn't even touch on the comfort factor, noise factor, mpg factor, etc. I think you're just looking for an excuse to put on new shoes. LOL

I would leave your all seasons on...

Leave your all=seasons on. If it snows heavy while you are down south, buy some 50 pound bags of rock salt, sand or other material and put them in the trunk for the return trip.
