Tire tread question to help solve vibration issue
Hey guys. I have a 2007 LS460 that I have had vibrations with for the last 18 months. I have 22" wheels with a front :255/30/22 and the rear: 295/25/22. I initially ran a Continental DWS and had vibrations. Then the shop sold me a set of Pirelli P Zero Nero and the vibrations continued. I had the dealership look at the car and they discovered that the tires were defective . The foreman put the car up in the air and started it and put it in drive. While the wheels were in the air and spinning you could clearly see the vertical tread lines on the tire were moving left and right and slightly up and down as well. I took the car to discount tire and the manager said that its normal for the tread to oscillate back and forth like that. This, to me , makes no sense. How the hell is the tread on the tire moving back and fourth not going to create vibrations especially when both rear tires are doing this. We didnt spin the fronts but I am sure they have a little wiggle in them from what I can feel in the wheel ( vibration much worse in the body than the wheel).
I was going to buy a new set of Michelin pilot sport 2 tires but they want 1700 and these Pirellis are still brand new. I will spend the money if I need to because I cant really take this much longer. Long story short the car has been in the shop for over a total of 45 days to evaluate this issue. We have replaced drive shaft, suspension parts and bushings, evaluated the body, subframe, alignment etc. I have even had two field technical specialists fly from california to AZ to look at the car and they all say they cant figure it out. The odd thing is that the vibration was also happening with a new set of oem Bridgestones.
Help !!

Before you keep throwing money into tires, I would have a local shop with a Hunter Road Force machine measure the run out of the wheels. If you've changed tires and still have the same problem I bet you have a wheel out of round. It would be highly unlikely to have 3 sets of defective tires by 3 different manufacturers. Also, with a 25 and 30 series tires, there's not much protecting the wheel. If you hit a pot hole hard enough the wheel will bend and cause vibration issues. If you put the OEM wheels/tires back on and still have the vibration issue then it is suspension related and you don't need new tires. If you put the OEM wheels/tires back on and the problem goes away it's probably the wheel out of round because you've already tried 3 different tires.

As Zig said I would have the wheels checked.
As far as the tread shifting left and right when spinning I have never seen this, but that wouldnt cause any vibration. If anything that would cause the car to "walk" around when you are clearly driving straight.
Since you are in Phoenix, I would go to WSI they have a machine to check the wheels and make sure all is good! http://www.wheelspecialists.com/

Well, the same mechanic who tests the run out of the wheels can also check the run out of the tires. He will be able to tell you 100% if the tire is out of round. If the tire has checked out and you still get this side to side motion when spinning the tire there has to be something else at play.

they told me that the run out on the wheels are good but that the run out on the tires are a bit high. Discount tire couldnt get the run out less than .30 or .25 which is higher than the .10 that Lexus recommends. The odd thing is that I know I had the vibration with my stock wheels as well so I personally think its the car but the techs, foreman, and the field tech specialists cant figure it our. i dont know what the hell to do

I still think the tread is not supposed to be moving left and right as it spins. The tread is vertical and it should be still. I just cant believe that when the tread on both rear tires is moving left and right is supposed to be normal.
