i had hre for 2 yrs and now jdm wheels for 3 yrs, i think i can say something
hre:
- good quality, definitely strong wheels, daily driver no problem
- very very expensive, you pay a lot for the brand imho
- it does have clear coat peeling problem, i had that on my wheels
- the lips could be headache. clear coat is easy to clean but gradually get dull. if you don't get clear coat (just high polish), you can make it as shiny as you want, but good luck doing that after brake dust eat into the metal (elbow grease)
- pretty light for the size since they are forged
jdm wheels
- mostly heavier coz' they are cast (mostly, not all)
- imho they are just as strong. two sets of wheels on our two cars, daily driver, never a single problem
- paint quality is better than hre imho
- the lips are much much better done. most of them are anodized. very easy to clean and durable
- good luck if you curb the wheels. anodized lips are almost not repairable
- it might be harder to get support since they are from japan
- most of them are cheaper than hre, more affordable

HRE's are always well-regarded, and as others said, you pay a lot for just the brand. but of course, their center cap really is simple, elegant, and just *****in'.
i've not followed the scene and don't recall if their lipped are rolled or solid, but you do hear less about bent HRE's than most others. and like rom said, their wheels are fully forged and ridiculously light, while most japanese forged is a forged barrel and cast center...but if you're asking about HRE's in this capacity, you probably don't need to care either

HRE's aren't allowed in road racing, because they break. I don't know how well that holds up compared to daily driving your vehicle, but I wouldn't pay alot for wheels that have been banned from racing functions due to them breaking under pressure.
Which japanese wheel manufactures were you looking at for comparison?

Thanks everyone for the info. The reason I like HRE is because they are simple, elegant, clean look. $$$ is not the issue if they are strong, be honest, I will be more comfortable with JDM wheels, but not that many options for 20' with clean mesh style like HRE 590R. I have been looking for 20' thru VIP mangazine and some other japanese magazines, they are all pretty nice, but I just don't have the "click" feeling with them....hehe
