Default Question about wheels and lugs

I have a friend, who doesn't post here, who has a 1991 LS400. He just bought a set of used 20 inch rims for his ride. Rims were in great condition and the tires looked pretty new as well. There was one problem though.

The rims did not come with lugs. He said that the owner of the rims claimed that the lugs were stolen from him when he took off the rims and left the lugs in a bag in his garage. So my question is, is there any way to tell what kind of lugs the wheels used?

I checked out the wheels themselves and it seems like they're the cheap ones with no name branding on them. Although he knew that the rims didn't have lugs, it was a good deal anyway because of the tires and the condition they were in.

So is there a way to tell which lugs are for the rims? Could the problem be solved by just going to a place that sells aftermarket rims?

Yes. Just take it to a tire shop. There are different styles-- tuner, acorn, etc. Or... maybe post a pic up and someone might be able to eyeball it? I know on my car I had to change to the "tuner" style lugs because the stock ones had a washer on them and wouldn't fit into the lughole.

Well, I don't have a pic, but the rims are pretty much the *cheaper* chrome rims (bling bling rims). No name brand on them and he said the stock lugs don't fit. I would assume that open ended lugs are needed with these rims, as with a lot of these types of custom rims. I also saw when he showed me that the rims are universal fit rims, which are made to fit at least 2 types of lug patterns. But then he said that the guy that sold it to him had an SC300, which was why he knew the rims would fit his LS.

I guess another question is, would it matter which kind of open ended lugs were used. Because from past experience, I know that some lugs ended up chewing up the screws.

i would have to say that a majority of all aftermarket wheels now use acorn style lugnuts. the kind that have the tapered end. but post a pic and we can see from there.

OK, I recommended open ended lugs like the ones I used for my car, like in the picture attached. Sorry for the quality of the photo

But he took his car to his mechanic and he said those lugs were the wrong type and may ruin his car.

So anyway, here are the rims

Tell your friend that he needs (20) 12 x 1.50 conical seat lugs.

Yuji

p.s. He may also need hubrings .... The wheel should be a 73.1mm and the vehicle is 60.1mm. So, he will need 73-60.1mm hubrings.
