Advice please: Purchasing new tires, and how to avoid nasty tire noise?
Good Eve,
I'll be brief. I own a 99 GS400 with 122K. Currently I'm riding on the Avon Tech M550 A/S, and my tires/wheels are stock 17". With my past 2 tires purchases, I have been plagued with the most annoying road "humming" noise. With the recomendatoin of the Avon's, I proceeded to purchase with 98K on my odo. The first 5-7K were decent(as expected)
My local Lexus dealership informed me that the cause of the humming is a certain groove in the tread. Is this true? If so, what caused this? Alignment, wheel balancing? rotatoin, or all of the above?
I want to fix this problem in the future, can you please advise on how to go about this.
Thanks.

Hey Kazam. Where have you been?
I'll keep it short. Turanza LS-Z. You'll never look back. I currently run them on my 17s and they're quieter than my 16s. You lose a bit in the performance department because they're a grand touring all season tire (as opposed to ultra high performance all season), but they more than make up for it in quiet and comfort.
I don't know about the LS-V. If you read some of the reviews on Tire Rack, you will see that there are a few people who bought the LS-V and sent them back within the 30-day trade-in period for the LS-Zs.
Hope this helps.

e-man, how are you? It's been quite some time, maybe 2 years? Anyway, hope all is well. I still remember our conversations about the Alpine Silver.
I'll look into the Turanza LS-Z. What cost are we expecting?

That's the thing about the Turanza LS-Zs. They're expensive, like $217 a piece expensive (on Tire Rack). If you're looking for a less expensive alternative, a lot of guys have had very good luck with the Pirelli Pzero Nero M&S (around $140-$160 per tire). If you're looking for quiet and comfort, I'd also check out the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S and the Michelin Pilot Exalto (the former being more performance oriented). In the end, it's all a trade-off. The more quiet and comfort, the less performance, and vice versa. If I were you, I'd spend some time on Tire Rack and read some of the reviews. Feel free to shoot me a PM if you have any specific questions. Talk to you later.
