Default Would you drive with this (damaged) tire?

Had a bad morning with the GS... my daily driver LS is in the shop getting the l-sportline kit put on, my GF's 911 was dropped off at a tire shop this AM to get new rear tires after a Porsche driving event last weekend... so I had to drive the GS to a client meeting in downtown Charlotte.

Memorial Day weekend is a giant NASCAR event in Charlotte called Speed Week, lots of roads were closed downtown and I had to park in a different parking deck than I usually do. Long story short, the bad day started with a bad scraping of the bottom of my new front clip going up the ramp into the deck. Then the spot that I took had a hidden curb that had some broken concrete in it which found its way onto the side of my wheel (two inches of curb rash) and took a chunk out of my tire sidewall when I pulled in. Totally my fault for not seeing the broken concrete and getting too close to the curb.

So... I have the 'Tail of the Dragon' driving event this weekend, leaving tomorrow and have this big chunk out of my tire. The drive will be fairly aggressive turning with some high speed and at least 6 hours on the highway. I'll deal with the curb rash later, just worried about the tire being OK to use. No leakage noted so far.

Called Tire Rack and they won't have a same size / same brand replacement tire until mid-June. Trying to source one to get it overnighted here, but wanted to get some opinions from folks on driving with the damaged tire.

Second option might be two new (different brand or model) tires on the rear, but would prefer to just replace one.

Your thoughts? I tend to be pretty cautious on driving with damaged tires, but not sure if that chunk is useful or not. I do have a spare if needed.

Ahhh thats nothing. I took a much bigger chunk outta my bro's tire and drove on it for a long time. Obviously you will want to fix it eventually but for the weekend Iwouldn't worry about it. Now go have fun and tame the dragon

Just got back from the tire place where we picked up my GFs car and had the tech come look at the wheel. He also said it's fine to drive on - no fabric showing. He said the tire did exactly what it was meant to do, the part that is missing is called the 'curb guard' and is meant to protect the tire.

Thanks guys for your replies

Default Looks fine

Ironically, it looks like you just took a small bit out of the "rim protector" edge, which isn't part of the tire structure.

sorry to hear about the curb too. short story, one of my rear hre wheel, it has over 1/2 wheel curbed too.... flooding water on christmas day helped to hide a large pothole

hope you will get that fixed soon after the meet!
