Default Wheel Experts - Opinions?

My engineering backround often makes me overanalyze things, so... am I worried for nothing?

Given that the stock GS 17's are a 50mm offset, does putting something in front with a 35mm offset create very different stresses on the wheel bearings, etc.? Will this wear the moving parts more quickly?

I have been hesitant to put on aftermarket wheels with an offset much different than the stock 50mm. Am I too paranoid? I drive 30 to 40K a year and do not want the steering getting any sloppier than it all ready is. I would kick myself in the butt if I had to start replacing control arms/rack/bearings after another 50K (whcih is only a year and a half for me).

How many miles have folks put on their cars with 32 to 38mm offset setups up front?

For a staggered setup, say with a 10 inch rear wheel instead of the 8, what should the offset be to keep the wheel 'centered', relative to the forces on the bearings? Thoughts?

Thanks.

I have 19X8.5/10 and my offsets are 38/45. I have no problems whatsoever.

My steering is less "sloppy" now, than before.

first of all i suggest you read my faq at the top of this forum, it gives a lot of info on wheels and what exactly is offset in general. basically offset by itself is meaningless, you have to put in the width of the rim as well

as for stress, as long as you get enough turns on the lug nuts (or the studs are long enough), it should not produce overloading stress that will wear out the studs or the bearing. even with a very wide rims, the goemetry of the suspension won't change significantly enough to alter the wear.

about staggered setup, again, refer to my guide, it gives a lot of information and choices

about offset in the front? most people with 8.5 to 9" wheels, the offset are from 32 to 44 i think. i for one has 8.5 +32 in the front. never a problem

Default Luved your FAQ

Read it long ago, and refer to it repeatedly. I know alot of folks out there are running the setups you refer to, just concerned that they maybe haven't put 40K or more mile on the car with the setup.

Thanks for reassurance. I'm just a little paranoid.
