steering rack bushing change waste of time.
I have my sc400 tor apart front end all in peaces.
so I needed some sway bar bushings, mine are dry as a bone and wor out.
I read about steering rack bushings so i got them as well.
the instructions that came with the bushings says u can tap the old ones out,
my foot. I had to use a 5 buck gear puller and a nut at the tip of it to remove the old ones. the old ones have 190k miles on them. my old bushings look bran new. it was a pain to get them out of the car, i dont think it will make a diff.
its a calif. car my bolts on the upper and lower control arms look like new and came right out. 190k miles and only the right ball joint seems wor out.
I did the shocks/struts and they also were ok except the left rear was leaking.

it probably has a newer rack in it, alot of times bushings are not sold separate and when you take your car to a shop with steering rack bushing problem you need a new rack. I got my car at 180k miles and when i drove it home when i turned to go around slight bend nothing would happen, then i would turn a little more nothing, then more and all of the suden car would try to switch lanes very dangerously. The bushings were shot.

Unless they replaced the rack or the previous owner replaced the bushing there is no way the old bushings will look brand new at 190k miles.
my car has 76k miles i bought the bushings to replace them w/o even checking to see if they are worn out but after checking them after recieving the new bushings i decided not to replace them now .
at 120k they are usually gone, just like motor mounts the stock one are usually gone after 100k miles.
Tabaka you actually see the rack moving back and forth when you turn the wheel left and right?
You should see the rack moving around the bushing..

mine had a replaced rack and i still had issues. when they replace the rack those 2 small round bushings get replaced, mine looked new at 140k (but i know my rack had been replaced). they were a pain to get out, but im glad i did it all because that large rubber clip that goes inside the round part that clamps the rack in place on the passenger side of the rack, was totally shot.
Im thinking they don't replace this when they change the rack, they just reuse. the samller ones are in the rack technically so they will be new, but the 3rd part of the rack bushing kit is not part of the rack (it goes around the rack) and may not get replaced.
If your big rubber clip bushing is shot like mine, it will also allow the entire rack to travel left and right. not good!! if your small bushings look perfect just replace the big clip.

the car had 145k miles on it when i bought it in 2004.
I was going by carfax for repairs done.
the pre owner was- corporation owned.
it had a new tranny put in at 120k miles.
oh my front wheel bearing's were shot, I bought used hubs from ebay 60.00 with good bearing's. that was a risk they refused to measure runout and deviation.
my old hubs were hard to turn and u can feel ruff spots on the barring. .005 on them
the ebay ones are vary smooth..001 on them, I have not gotten to the rear suspension yet. I think its ok. my new after market upper control arms are nice, the ball joints are vary stiff, the new lower ball joints are not.

I have a question for you guys. I don't have any of the steering issues you guys were having on the high way with the steering not responding, but I do notice when I back out of my driveway and turn the wheel, the car will "shimmy" back into place after it it's leveled onto the street. Is this just the tires settling on uneven ground, or are the steering bushings flexing?
