Default Rear sway bar links?

Has anyone ever replaced those? I removed the old ones, but I cant seem to insert the new ones into the control arm. The go in so tight that it seems that the only way to install them is to hammer them in, but there isn't really space for that.

Loosen the lower shock bolt first.

Just curious, what were your symptoms of bad rear sway bar links that gave away that you needed to replace them?
