K&N Air filter?
Hey everyone, I've tried searching this forum about K&N filters but didn't get any results. Anyways, I was wondering if anybody has tried using the drop-in K&N filters that replace the standard paper air filter on their GS430. I've read that some people (with other cars) said that once they installed a K&N filter, too much air was being let in and messing up their engines or something like that, or that the oil comes off and dirties up the MAF sensor. And then I've read that some people say that the K&N filter is great and you get a little better sound, a little more power and better fuel mileage. So my question is does anybody know the effectiveness of the K&N air filter on a GS and whether there would be any bad effects on the car? Thanks a lot
Also, as a side question, in my last bit of driving, my car seems to be getting absolutely terrible fuel mileage. I got 11-13mpg driving around the city, never going over 3000rpm and driving in a manner to try and save gas. This isn't normal is it?

answer to your fuel question: no, not normal. the 3uz should be getting between 17-22mpg with average hwy/city mix and average driving. check for dirty maf, dirty throttle body, dump a bottle of lucasoil fuel system cleaner in before your next fillup, and make sure the spark plugs/coils are still good.
i have the K&N on my 01 GS3, car used paper filters for 123k until i got it. the problems you are referring to are from people being stupid when cleaning/reoiling the filter during scheduled maintenance and the oil is getting sucked into the maf causing havoc. I can honestly tell you that after having the filter in the car for over 3 months (i haven't checked it to see if it needs cleaning but my fuel mileage has been consistently fine so i wasn't too terribly worried), i have YET to have a single problem.
if anything, once i installed it back in the middle of pollen season, it performed better and got better fuel mileage. i don't regret buying it at all.

For your city driving it just depends on how bad your city traffic is and how many stops lights you get stuck at and so forth. In pure city driving in my area, I can get as low as 12-13 MPG. I don't believe anything is wrong with my car either since my older LS400 and SC400 were just as horrible in pure city driving. However, all 3 really shine on the open freeway were I get over 20 MPG. My combined (About 70% city 30% highway) is about 17/18 MPG and this is all with E10 fuel.

Probably not the right forum to start this thread but anyway. Check out the link below to the 2nd-Gen section. In the thread on post #3, DASHOCKER gives the right directions to install the K&N filter. I've used K&N for over two years and have not had an issue with oil remnants on the MAF sensor. Good luck.

Thanks for all the helpful replys and helpful links! I installed the K&N filter a few days ago and also picked up a bottle of the crc MAF sensor cleaner. The MAF sensor was indeed quite dirty, seemed like it was coated in a layer of carbon or something. After quite a number of sprays I could finally see the metal on the MAF sensor element. I haven't got to drive the car too much after installing the K&N filter and cleaning the MAF sensor but it seems to be getting better mileage already. I'll let you guys know if I see some definite mileage increases. Thanks for all the help guys
