The OEM axles have got even more expensive lately ($400+ each). The latest part number 43430-60062 (versus 43430-60061 and 43430-60060) also requires a flange nut since the cotter pin hole is gone, replaced by a slot in the end of the axle.
The poor quality of most aftermarket/rebuilt axles has been noted often in these forums. Some seem to have had good experience with Cardone, but I can't find it available anymore. I've also had less than the best of experiences with CVJ (long story).
Since the GX470 shares this part with the FJ, Tacoma and 4Runner, I tried ordering a pair on the old part number through my local Toyota dealer last year which didn't go well (another long story). However, doing some searching in the 4Runner forums, I came across a number of folks that replaced their 4Runner 4th gen axles (same part number as ours) with a 5th gen axle, part number 43430-60083 which can be found for less than $300 each. In addition, it is said to have better boot design than the 4th gen version. No idea whether it requires the flange nut, but I assume so. I somewhat confirmed this by searching on the Trakmotive aftermarket replacement part number, which is the same for the GX as well as the 4th and 5th generation 4Runners.
Question is, does anyone here have any real-world experience replacing the GX axles with the 43430-60083 version? Can you confirm the flange nut and better boots? I did a search in this forum and found no mention, at least for the last few years.
I know this is not what you are looking for but ... I don't go off roading or anything extreme beyond driving in winter conditions in northeast PA, so when I was rebuilding my drive train, I got a set of new axles from NAPA as they had a life time warranty, were reasonably priced and didn't require core exchanges and I figured I could rebuild the old ones with premium parts for spares (that never happened). This was five?six years ago and FWIW, they are holding up. I did have a little difficulty getting the store to get me two with the better boots as the parts guys seemed the think the plastic was the same as the neoprene, but got lucky that the one girl who works there was into Toyotas and off-roading and new exactly what I was looking for. BTW, these were not the expensive ones, but one of the in between options after the rebuilds. HTH Kevin
Thanks for the responses. I guess I'm going to be the guinea pig here on the new part number. According to what I'm seeing, it is also the part number for the GX460. I'll post back here with my experience when I've received it and installed it.
