Trailer Hitch on a 2006
#16
$500. I haven't used it yet. The most I would tow without brakes is 1,100 pounds or so. I plan on towing my Honda ST1100 with a 400 pound trailer. The installer said the hitch is strong enough to tow 2,000 pounds easily. The owners manual specs bolts that have to be torqued in the event of towing, and I plan on changing the ATF (synthetic) after every trip. I don't know if a transmission cooler would be a good idea or not. If I stick to low profile I think I will be OK without it. The CPU cuts out if the fluid gets too hot so I should get a warning.

I took this when I took the others. In this photo, you can't really see it. Since it is all black, it is very hard to see.

I need some opinions.
My motorcycle forum group is having a rally some 17 hours away. We will all be trailering. I have a trailer that weighs 400 pounds and a motorcycle that weighs 700 pounds. It has a windshield, so there will be some drag. I towed it a couple hours away for another event and had no problems. I put it in 4th and set the cruise at 70. I will be the only one in the car. The trailer doesn't have brakes, and it would cost $1,000 for surge brakes. I have an Excursion, but I don't relish the thought of driving it 17 hours there and back.
Does this sound safe?

Necromancing this thread, because I was looking into adding a light duty hitch to my SC 430. I too have a motorcycle I might want to tow to the shop when it's not running or take to Denver to avoid riding I-25 for an hour (It's a sport bike). I really like some of the solutions in the above thread and am encouraged to investigate my own build. So if anyone else was thinking about this, here's the thread from the dead!

My hitch system has worked out well. I trailered my 700 plus pound ST on a 400 pound trailer to Pennsylvania for a rally. I didn't trailer to the Rushmore ride, but I should have. The fabricator charged me $500. Money well spent. EDIT Be sure and not tow in overdrive. Downshift one gear and let it rev a little bit. Lugging is what kills the transmission.
