Default SC430 ML Blown Amp 4 ohm versus 8 ohm Speaker

Being a new owner of a 02 SC430 with blown front 6 x 9 speakers (imagine that) I have seen much discussion about the blown speakers of the Mark Levinson system especially on earlier models of the SC430. On other threads, there has been great comments from 2 very knowledgeable members about the use of replacing the 8 ohm 6 x 9 OEM speakers with the more conveniently found 4 ohm and whether that will blow the ML amp.
Science says that it will cause an amp issue, however the search that I have done has not found comments (possible my bad search) of 4 ohm speakers causing a blow of the ML amp, so I am posting this thread for those who have installed the 4 ohm speaker to report issues.
Please post;
1. Specific (manufacture and model number) 4 ohm 6 x 9 speaker used
2. How long has it been in use
3. Year of SC430
4. Type of use ie, always cranked, to never cranked
5. Installed by DIY or professional.
6. Any issues with the ML amp

hi and welcome
i have a 2002 430sc. I use the Dc Gold 6x9 R 8ohm speakers. they are the stock ohms for the car. and they are great speakers. used them for 4 years now. at first the amps did the install my self. stock speakers very cheap made. i would not use the 4ohm speakers. they make very good 8ohm speakers for are cars.

Lots of posts about the 4 OHM replacements. No doubt speaker quality is paramount. Lots of people have switched over to 4 Ohms.

The risk is related to the total load on the amp. There are 9 speakers so I thought that changing two of them to 4 OHMs shouldn't be problem. About a year and half ago I replaced the door speakers with Pioneer 6x9 two- way 4-OHM speakers and have not had any problem. I crank it up louder with the top down but not as loud as that Kiss concert in the 70's that caused hearing loss ...

Sound is fantastic ... I bought the speakers at Best Buy and did the work myself. Of course there no risk at all using 8-OHM speakers like Bacardi. Before I decided I searched this and other forums and couldn't find any cases of problems replacing two speakers with a 8OHM amp.

...hey Auto....I'm using Boston Acoustic SX95 (6x9),in the doors & S45(4in),in the rear...I've been running them for about 4yrs now, never an issue. My SC is a 2002 & depending on the mood, I can & do crank it occasionally...more now, since I've installed a Rockford Fosgate P2 10in & Rockford Prime R-500 Mono amp to push it . I installed the speakers, they were all plug & play. The amp/woofer was done at the stereo shop, since they offered free install with purchase. No issues with the ML amp or anything else installed...hope this helps

Thank you so much tex. Helps a bunch. It's another data point in the discussion to replacing the 8 OHM front 6x9 speakers with a 4 OHM. I hope that others will share their experience, pros or cons as to actual results when replacing with 4 OHM speakers.

Just replaced my Mark Levinson 6x9's with Phoenix Gold SX series 4 OHM speakers in my 04 SC430. Sound great and hoping for no problems.

It's fine just do it, I'm running kicker 6x9 in the doors with a new skar 8" dual voice coil 4 ohm sub. Both the door speakers and sub was blown in my car. You're not listing to music at 100% volume so you're no where near the max output of the amp.

I have been involved with audio amps since 1968 and I can tell you that it is a very unusual situation that would cause a problem going from 8 ohm to 4 ohm. Virtually all amps can handle that change. Remember, we are talking about nominal impedance here not resistance. And sorry AVS, it really has nothing to do with how loud you play the music.
