Default Rim Question

I recently purchased a used 2006 Blue/Saddle SC430. I have not had a chance to introduce myslef to the group, but will once I get some good pictures of the car.

Anway, this will be my daily driver, year round in Iowa. Obviously, we get snow so running 18" summer tires aren't going to work. I saw on Craigslist, there is a set of IS300 rims for sale for $250. I was thinking those would be perfect for winter tires. I am not ashamed to admit that all the rim talk about offsets, spacers, etc. is WAY over my head.

From the searches I have done through the forum, I think the IS300 rims will be a direct bolt on with no spacers or anything funky needed. Is this correct? I have the standard stock brakes, etc and intend to keep them stock.

Thanks for your help. This place is a wealth of valuable information.

IS300 rims on the SC430...hard to tell, can you get the specs on the rims? Do your research to find your compatibilty. Tirerack should be able to help you.

Just out of curiosity, isn't a 17x7 or 17x7.5 be what I was looking for regarding snow tires?

What other Lexus rims would you recommend for an easy bolt-on? Would the GS rims work? Assuming ES rims would be too small and frankly look weird (I say that as I contemplate putting IS rims on the car. LOL!)

Thanks for your help.

Hey Brian, welcome to CL. Why not just go to discount tire direct or tirerack and buy a set of inexpensive rims with winter tires. You can even get them shipped to you balanced and ready to mount.

I have an old set from tirerack that I use 3 months each year. Mille Miglia 16x7.5, with Bridgestone Blizzak 225/55/16. Used them 3 or 4 seasons and maybe there is one more season left in them.

I respectfully submit that a 17x7 or 17x7.5 is not too small for an SC. Matter of fact, I have wheels of that range on my '05 SC with MXV4 55 profile tires and the ride and quiet are exceptional. I've been told it will hurt my lap times ................................................... what lap times? I don't even know anybody who has lap times with an SC430. I am sure I wouldn't mind driving my car a vast distance because I would enjoy the smooth and quiet. Don't be afraid to wander from the straight and narrow path that confines some.

Smaller rims with high profile tires will definitely make the ride smoother and quieter.

My Sienna with 16-inch wheels is much smoother than my SC430. LOL

The factory spec is 18x8 with 245/40R18, change it to 17x7" / 7.5" with 225 will have less traction & less breaking power. Nature of physic. And I think smaller wheel doesn't look good on the SC

I'm also in Iowa (Solon) and my SC430 is my daily driver, except for howling snowstorms and deep snow. I run Conti's DWS year-round and am perfectly happy.

With that said, I would be even happier with extra rims and Blizzak type snows. As for size, as long as the final diameter (wheel + tire) is very similar (so your speedometer is reasonably accurate), and the rims are deep enough for the brakes, then go for it.

If you see a red one running around eastern Iowa, that's probably me. Haven't seen another yet.

My neighbors son upgraded his 2013 Scion FR-S wheels.
His originals are available, will it fit my 02 SC 430 for quieter, smoother ride and any better on gas mileage?

Wheels 17 x 7 in. Alloy Wheels
Tire Size 215/45R17 87W
Tire Type Summer or All Season Tires
Tread Width - front / rear 59.8/60.6 in.

I understand that 30 and 40 profile tires are all about performance......but why to Indy Champ Cars, Formula 1 cars, even Nascar all have higher profile tires? Don't they know that higher profile tires will hurt their lap times and make their cars look bad.

Prasha, I did a "FR-S wheel Specs" search on Google and the wheels came back as being 5x100 lug layout. The SC430 has a 5x114.3 layout so the FR-S wheels will not fit your bolt pattern.

Here are some possible candidates (note: I have no relationship at all with the leads below):

The last hookup wheels have an offset of +42 and a hub bore of 60. The hub bore matches the Lexus.

Just some thoughts. I'm just shooting from the hip here to show you there are viable possibilities if you look for them.

I just wanted to confirm offsets and everything. I attached the rims I was looking at. The ad says they are off of an IS300, but I don't know what year. Do you know if these rims will take the TPMS sensors as well? I have read all about the pros and cons of the factory system, but I would like to keep it working.

I wanted to thank you all for your perspectives. I can get these rims cheap and they will be running Blizzaks. Now seems to be a good time to buy as Tire Rack is having a close out on last years models and a special on this years.

Thanks again.

Although the wheels might fit and clear the brake calipers, their offset moves them to the very inside of your wheel well. You might be able to use a 12mm spacer to get them out closer to the outside edge of the wheelwells.
