Roof retraction survey
Please reply with a quick response to:
The approximate number of roof retractions and approximate total to date and if a retraction problem occurred (other than an easy fix, e.g. bad fuse, jumped cable, unlatched luggage cover in trunk). What was the approximate number of retractions when the failure occurred?
I got my '02 (36,700 mi.) in 2007 and have put 5,500 mi./yr (now at 64,000). I retract my roof about 50 times a year, thus about 250 times to date. I have no knowledge of previous owner's use. I have had no problems to date.
Thanks for contributing to this survey repsonse on our forum.

I have a 2007, purchased in 2010, and I would estimated that the roof has has been opened and closed 6 times a week minimum during the months May-September - so about 300 times or so. No Problems

I have had my 2002 for six years, but unfortunately due to the crap climate in the UK I probably only lower the roof about 20 - 30 times a year, so only about 150 total.
Car had 25,000 on the clock when I bought it and it is approaching 50,000 now.
No problems whatsoever with the roof (or the whole car for that matter).
If I get a problem with the roof in the near future I will put it down to the fact that I just said that. lol
Best regards
Steve

I think the key here is thorough inspections and preventative maintenance. Inspections means a willingness to take the trunk garnish apart. That means a couple hours of labor. Preventative maintenance means a close inspection of switches for foreign materials and cleaning of any oxidation along with lubrication with lithium grease where appropriate.

My 04 has been trouble free with the roof retracting approximately 150 times in the last four years-my use and the former owners estimate. Additionally there has been no cracking of the original windshield which has been well documented in past posts! What a wonderful automobile!

Average 300+ per year. On the rare day that it rains, I don't drive it. On the days I do Drive (most days) it gets opened 3 or 4 times a day, so I will go with a minimum of 300 x 4 years=1200 times since the purchase in June of 2008 and I believe that I am underestimating. That also says a lot about luxlink since I added it to my sc 2 weeks after the purchase. And i ALWAYS use luxlink to open and close. Today ive already used it 4x and im not done yet. If i had it to do over again, i would NOT have gotten the rear window mod. It been used no more than 20x in the same amount of time. No problems and I choose my dash to knock on wood. I love the reliability of this great car. Today, I went to get an estimate on rechroming one of my wheels and mentioned to my wife at least 3x during that short trip that I can't believe how great the ride is for a 10 year old car. On par with her 3 year old/20k mile Infiniti and my new 500 mile odyssey touring. Although, i still tell her it is more luxurious than either of our 2 other vehicles. Also all 3 are under zero deductable warranties until 2015 (SC), 2018 (infiniti), and 2020 (odyssey). I love it!!! Ain't life great......

03 purchased new. Open/close about 40 times/year. January 2013 the car will be 10 years old, so I have about 400 sequences without incident. I asked the Lexus dealer about preventive maintenance and he told me "none required".

I've owned mine for only six months but I would still estimate over 150 cycles in that time and never a problem. After reading the links about cracked windshields however I release the button a few inches above the windshield on closing and let it gently contact before I hit the button again to latch. Here in northern California it's hard to keep your top up, at least on the car.

2005 PB owned since February
41,239 miles, driven four times since February, roof down 4 times. Previous owner kept the car garaged on Long Island. No fading or signs of outdoor storage or winter use. No idea how often he/she put the roof down but their is zero wear on any part of the interior, buttons, seats anywhere.

It sits covered in my heated/CC garage hooked up to a battery tender. My Porsche gets most of my "wheel time" in the summer...

2004 purchased in 2010
Purchased with 44k and now has almost 45k miles. Now record of any problems before and all maintenance was at a Lexus dealer. I have not had any problems. I would guess about 200 retractions per year. Also no windshield problems. The height sensors needed replacing at about 46k.
