Default Radio Replacement

I like the sound of my ML system in my 2003 SC430, but I hate the lack of features...specifically ipod integration, bluetooth hands-free and Sat radio. Is there any way to swap out my stock Mark Levinson head unit with one that would do the above?

This is a pretty popular question and one that's been discussed quite a few times around here.

Check out these threads...a small sampling.

One big thing to keep in mind...having the stereo replaced is no big deal. Having the stereo replaced and keeping factory navigation functionality IS a big deal!

IMO swaping out the ML unit would take away from the SC's classy interior. Unless the hideaway door is closed, I just dont feel it'll look right.

It would be cool to be able to swap out my '03 head unit for one from an '06 or so so I can use the better vais converter. I bet the connectors are different.

You MIGHT be able to pull off that swap...but the biggest obstacle is the price. The dealership wants an INSANE amount of money for a replacement head unit.

For the $1,500.00+ price tag, you could buy a awfully nice aftermarket system AND have it installed.

The other issue you will have to deal with is that not all the radios in the SC430s through out the years are compatible. I wouldn't be surprised if the wiring harnesses changed also.

+1 on the aftermarket route. That may even be a plus when you go to sell it eventually, unless the buyer is a purist and only wants all OEM components. Personally, I'd take looks and practicality over original parts any day.

If the aftermarket stereo installer does it right (using mating connectors instead of cutting wires), you can put it back to stock when it comes time to sell, if that's an issue for a potential buyer.

Has anyone tried to install a newer radio in an older SC?

The secret to replacing the head unit is the integration unit. I highly recommend the Beat-Sonic MVA-12L or 13L depending on your year model. I have a 2004 so I used the 12-L. It retained most of the functionality of the steering wheel controls and intergration to the Mark Levenson amp. Navigation system still works flawlessly. Down side is the price. Because it is a "vertical market" product I paid $430 for it. Lets face it, it's a Lexus and we need to keep things at the Lexus standard of quality.
