Default 30k Serice Needed? 2002 SC430 w/26k miles

Hello-I have not had my 30k service done and I know it is 30k OR 36 months, so begs the question do you NEED to do the service now? I have a 2002 with 26k miles.

I have done the a/c filter and air filter myself, but never touched the brake fluid, p/s fluid, transmission flush/fill, rear differential flush/fill or the radiator flush/fill.

What have you all done with your weekend cruisers with low miles and what do you recommend? I am not in favor of dropping $1k for the 30k Lexus service and all you are paying for are a couple of drain/fills of fluids and inspect a bunch of things and throwing in a couple of filters. Hell, for $1k, they ought to replace all belts, hoses, brake pads, spark plugs, etc. and you know they aren't doing that.

I did the serpentine belt myself (that was easy). I am thinking about going to my local lube shop that I know the guys there very well and letting them do the basic fluids and then taking it to Lexus for brake pads and the transmission because I do value someone that knows the car well for those.

Thanks

I asked my trusty Lexus Tech about the service on my 02 with 30K.

The service writer was of course pushing for it to be done ..........7 bills.

I wound up taking the tech's advise and the only thing I did was to change the trans.fluid.....he checked all the other fluids et al and told me they were fine . For what they do, what you pay it is not worth the money.

He did advise that each time the SC is put on the lift have your tech check the wheel bearings and lower control arms and bushings.

Hope this saves you some time and money, in time all the other stuff will of course need to be restored but not now.

Default Here's what I did with my '02.

I have been slowly changing out the fluids on my '02 with 22K miles simply because of age, not due to wear and tear.

Steering fluid can be changed in stages with a battery syringe ($5) and drawing a pint or so out at a time then adding new. Fluid ~$3

I had my son bleed the brakes with me and changed all of the fluid when we rotated the wheels. About $5 in fluid, $5 for a wrench and some tubing with a coffee can. A little sloppy but works fine.

I am changing the Trans fluid to Amsoil Synthetic three (3) quarts at a time each time I have the car up in the air. The owners manual doesn't recommend ANY service interval. I drop the drain plug, drain three quarts and add new. About $30 each time. I figure in a year or so I will have virtually all of the fuid changed.

I changed the radiator fluid and added fresh antifreeze. $15

I did the belt myself as well - $40.

I'll change the rear diff when I get to it.

Total cost: about $100 and some time.

I'll take the $900 and put it towards a set of aftermarket wheels. While I understand that some people don't like to work on cars, I enjoy it but enjoy keeping my money in my pocket even more!

PS. I will bite the bullet and get the timing belt done by a qualified service shop. I read the post on how to do it and simply don't have the tools or the time.
