Is it possible? 28.8 mpg?

I've never really bothered about the mpg before until today. So far I've driven 144 miles approx. refueled and it was just 5 gallons to fill up and the math having these numbers gives me 28.8 miles per gallon. Typical so. Cal speed is what I'm doing. I have a stock 5 speed 1997 sc300.

I believe its possible. On my long runs from Va to Al, I averaged 27mpg in my auto SC4. But everything has to be PERFECT. No lead foot, no a/c and optimal weather conditions. The car has to be in tip-top shape too especially with regards to tire balancing and pressure. Other than that, 23mpg in mixed driving is the most I ever see.
And you have to use every drop of gas before the next fill-up....and that practice strains the fuel pump.

Average mpg
Here's my result 306 miles/11.10 gallons =27.56 mpg. No ac... I did hit a lot of elevation. That's to say from sea level to higher grounds. I started in San Diego heading to San francisco. 😊
I find it quite hilarious that Im reviewing a car that's almost 20 years old.
Hope this helps though.

I think that's spot on, I drove from mpls to austin tx in a gmc savana high top averaging 65mph driving modestly and hit 26mpg average so an aerodynamic car driven modestly should do better than that at least, this summer I will try for 30mpg. I think it's possible even if you **** off traffic driving -10mpg on the highway. Ha

I haven't calculated my car's MPG personally, but I know that when I first bought my SC 300 the display in the cluster said the average was 23.2 MPG. It was previously driven by an older lady in the LA area, so considering the traffic in LA is terrible and assuming you didn't encounter much traffic, 28.8 MPG seems plausible.

When I first bought my car in Phoenix, I drove it home to Denver and of course checked mileage. Filled up in Meteor Crater, AZ and then again in Las Vegas, NM, which hand calculated to 27.5mpg. I was doing 80 with the cruise on and the AC for a lot of it. Aerodynamics, weight and a powerful engine not working hard are all good for mileage.

Lol, looking at it, 27.5 is almost sad compared to my daily driver Jetta TDI, which gets 46mpg mixed driving pretty much all the time. Still, for something as large as the SC, high 20s isn't bad.
