the chip just went kaput? maybe a cap or something on the power line isn't doing its job or shorted it. you are right that seems a bit odd of a failure.
its probably a lm2907 or 2917 from a quick search.

Im going to be updating this thread soon with a mod I did to the motors that allows the third pole to be energized. By doing that you can run a different voltage on the third pole than the other poles and therefore run something like a small SMD led at the tip of the needle like I have done before here: http://lextech.org/gallery/displayim..._display_media but also this is the way I liked it best, facing backwards and running as a tracer: http://lextech.org/gallery/displayim..._display_media The problem was always splitting the voltage at the pole, but might have that fixed.

Pole Position
Wow.... That is a great look!!!
How would that work with the option of the blue back lights with green needles ???? That is going to be my choice and on the list of upgrades. Wondering if the contrast will be enough for the tracing effect to work.
Is this tracing option going to be offered as an add on at Lextech? I assume so - this is so cool......
