Free air vs shallow mount
Now that free air subs are so much harder to find does anyone have experience with the shallow mount subs? I was thinking of building a small box where the stock changer goes. I wonder how it I'll sound.
I tried putting the shallow mount n the stock spot but it is a pita to make fit. I've made a custom mounting bracket but the speaker lid doesn't fit. I heard the gas tank dampens the sound too much.
Thanks - Sid

The speaker lid won't fit anymore, I can attest to that. I mounted mine inside the old subwoofer, tore out the guts and used the chassis as a mounting bracket. The gas tank doesn't dampen as much as you would think, you can adjust your amp to get around that. I don't have a problem with the sound it produces, it's quite clean and definitely punchy. Doesn't produce any rattles anywhere

As far as sound I do not yet have an amp to report on sound quality yet but I am just looking for something to give it a bit more punch with the new speakers all around
I did get the stock speaker lid to fit as well!

I just finished up my install with the 10in pioneer shallow mount. I didn't reuse anything from the stock setup. It was a pita since the shallow mount was wider and I had to enlarge the opening. 10 Dremel wheels later the whole was perfect. I went toa stereo shop and asked them to cut me ring to fit and a 11x11 square with the 10 in hole. I shaved and shape that down to stock size. Then screwed the ring and speaker down. I installed my alpine amp where stock sub would be.
Very happy. It hits pretty hard. Not as tight as a sealed box but still very good. Wouldn't hesitate to use again. I just place the grill on top of the sub and no movement yet.
Thanks - Sid
