A/C problems-possibly a compressor
To start with I am new to this forum but forums like this have always helped me when I have had problems with cars in the past and I want to thank everyone in advance for any and all help or knowledge they might be able to give.
To start my grandfather gave me his 2000 SC 300 this past fall and as it sat it only had 17,000 miles on it. Pretty sweet deal. Well the air coniditioning never worked too well last fall but since it was fall and wasn't really hot I was not to concerned with it.
I always noticed the AC light flashing when I tried to turn it on. Well now that it is getting hot out again I need to fix the air conditioning. 1st thing I did was try to recharge the cooling system with freon. After two small bottles the air temperature didn't change a bit. So I decided to do a little digging into why the AC light was flashing. I have searched online and found that could be caused by a few different sensors, but here is the wierd thing. The compressor is on and always stays on even when you turn the air conditioning completely off. I called a couple of local shops and one guy suggested I go out and see with the car off if I could turn the clutch with the motor off.
I could not so I'm guessing I have a bad clutch, which according to the man at the shop means I probably need a new compressor.
What I'm wondering is if that will solve the whole problem, or is there still a sensor that is bad too(causing the flashing AC light on the dash)? Next question is what should a compressor cost on this car? I was quoted nearly $500 which seems high for just the part

So do you have a SC300 or a LS400? You stated that you have a LS 300? The compressor for the SC300 should not cost $500 bucks. You could take yours off and have it rebuilt as well and it will be much less than $500. Also, I think the flashing issue has been covered in this forum already, I suggest you do a "search" and read up on it before others come in and flame you. The compressor could possible faulty causing the a/c light to flash or blink.
