Exhaust Shield Rattle
Mine was rattling too. When I took a look at the exhaust shields I found that the steel fasteners had rusted away. I removed the rest of them and replaced them with stainless steel bolts, washers and lock washers. It seemed to take care of the problem for almost a year. However, the rattle is back now. I believe I missed some corroded fasteners up near the exhaust manifold. I am going to replace any I missed with the stainless steel hardware I picked up at the local hardware store. Of course, it could just be the stainless steel that I already put on has vibrated loose which I'll remedy with a dab of Loctite if that's the case.

Rattling sound
My rattling got worse since my last post and finally took it to my mechanic to determine if it was the heat shields or not. Turned out to be the catalytic converters-- two were shot completely (insides crumbled) and the third had a hole in it so replaced all three converters. The weird thing was that the car passed the smog test with these bad converters (evidently the blockage temporarily improves the test readings in CA). The new converters were NOT cheap-- $1400 but at least they are warranted for the life of the car but I only had 75K on the car when they were replaced-- go figure. Previous owner running regular????
BTW, I've also tightened the heat shields since then as they do tend to vibrate if they get loose over time.

Rattles
My car started rattling recently, very loudly; extremely annoying. I had my car out at Titan for some follow up work and the rattle started again while the car was up on the lift running. The tech found that the problem was the exhaust heat shield so he put a clamp on it which stopped the noisy rattle!

Didn't read the whole thread, but your rattling problem sounds exactly what my car used to do. It ended up being a head shield under the car.
I have another heat shield that I think I've recently bottomed out on and bent it upward. At certain RPMs (more certain vibration levels) it'll make a continuous rattling sound. It's usually when the car's cold. Should be as simple as the previous issue to solve.
***Edit: just read the thread through. Billy- what part is that? I can't really tell from the pics but I feel like something similar to that might be making a metallic rubbing sound on the rear-driver's side of my car...
