steering column vertical adjustment
I am the original owner of a 1993 Lexus SC 400 with 46k on it. I loaned the car to a friend, who is a big guy, when I got the car back the steering wheel column vertical adjustment button produces a grinding noise with no movement. The telescopic feature works fine, however I want the vertical adjustment to work as original. Apparently a gear must have become stripped or something....does anyone know how to fix it? I would like to fix it myself if possible. I currently have the button in the manual mode to eliminate any vertical movement of the steering column until I get it fixed.

It grinds in both directions...however if I put some downward pressure on the steering wheel I can make it go lower. It is now in a moderately low level with the automatic button in the manual position.
Thanks for the concern...
