Default SC300 Rear Deck Rebuild

Sloooooowly fixing up my 92 SC300. M son and I have the entire interior taken out and when we took out the rear deck it was in bad shape in a few areas plus when we put in the stereo we will have four 6.5 speakers in the rear deck. We are going to utilize the existing spearker holes and the square ones right next to them. After looking for awhile I couldn't find any speaker grills that I like or would work so we decided to customize our on. I took a set of 10in rings split them and put some inserts in them and then covered them with speaker cloth. After that I painted the deck and grills with SEM.

10in speaker rings cut in half

Straight piece cut and glued between cut rings

Speaker cloth

One grill with one two coats put on.

Factory sub grill covered

Factory Sub grill painted

Grills fitted

Grills screwed in from bottom. One side of deck was so bad had to use fender washers to make sure didnt just pull screw head thru. You can also see where I had to put liquid nail on a few places that were starting to come apart.

Finished result

Nice job. I love audio builds so I'm looking forward to the end result. What 6 1/2's are you going with?

Looks like its going to be a sweet setup. Just make sure that you have enough clearance space for the speakers magnet. Nothing is worse than that! Good luck and keep showing us the progress!

Nice! My rear deck was broken in numerous places and duct taped together like a limp noodle.. Thinking about doing something like this with a whole new piece of wood or even sheet metal cut to fit.

I like your speaker covers and agree that black looks a lot better in the rear window than the stock beige. I plan to re-do mine in black, too.

I tore into my rear deck yesterday to test my right rear speaker. I should studied the way it was assembled before starting the take it apart. I tried to remove the speaker covers and the fiberboard just broke into pieces. As usual, this is going to be a bigger project than I bargained for.

My first thought was to trace the panel and make a new one. However, it's not flat and the clips that hold it into the body are in a tough spot. I think I'll try to glue the pieces back together and coat it all with epoxy to strengthen it.

Nice job. The rear deck definitely looks much better in black for sure compared to that nasty shade of brown.

I changed mine out to black last year.

I eventually removed the clips from mine to keep them from vibrating metal on metal. They don't really accomplish anything, and they never seem to all want to simultaneously clip back in once taken out the first time.

Mounting depth on any 6.5" that I know of shouldn't be an issue... Iirc it's about 5" to the gas tank- deep enough to fit an average 10" sub.
