Alternator heating
I have a '96 sc 300. The alternator gets very hot, hot enough to scald yuor hand after running for about 5 mins. Is this normal for this car? I'm on my second alternator trying to solve this, but both heat up pretty bad. Thanks

Hmmm...that doesn't sound right to me...and you're saying that two separate alternators have done the exact same thing?!! The overheating sounds like it's overworked trying to keep up with a high current demand. I'd suggest looking at the rest of your electrical system to see what's draining so much current.

Yes, the first is a 160 amp, which when cool, bench tests at over 100 amps. Under load in the car , it test's at negative amps, and seems to cycle positive intermittently at 20-30 amps. The second is a so called new alternator, 80 amp, it consistently puts out 40 amps. But both heat. Thanks again.
