my blue worm gear is held in by a nut that isnt a regular one.
it looks like in the picture. i cant get a regular socket on there and i tried pliers for about an hour and i stripped the worm gear real good. at this point i just want the nut off and dont care about the stripping.
ok, I had a mental lapse or something.
Mine never had a nut on it and i thought this thing in the picture was the nut, but that was wrong. the thing in my oh so great picture is what the worm gear sits on, you must use the paper clip method to pry it out off of this gear.
after about 10 minutes of fighting the worm gear was out.

Seeing as I didn't have a nut and was too lazy to go to the store...
I used 2 washers behind and 2 washers in front and held them in place while i put the lid on. the pressure against the lid and the pressure against the back keeps the worm gear perfectly lined up.

Default Wonderful Fix

Jim Walker just repaired my instrument cluster boards on my 93 LS-400 - I reinstalled and they worked great so imagine my distress when the tilt went when I started up for the first time. The wheel would only grind and not go down - worked fine in every other direction. Maybe I stressed it while fiddling with the dash repair. I was really upset and could only see $1,000 repair right after I was so proud of the cluster repair.

Then I went to this Forum thread and found the gear wheel fix - I used some washers from my shop and it works great. took about 45 minutes total.

THANK YOU

Larry

I thought mine was broken... I just unplugged the battery and it worked perfectly fine.

Just a suggestion before you take the column apart.

Just did mine. Thanks to the OP.

Make sure to open up the worm gear box and see for yourself what kind of ring you would need, before you head out to homedepot.
